Chapter 7 - The Safehouse FileAn hour later, the police tape had been stretched across the front gates of Elmwood Drive. The estate was officially a sealed federal crime scene.

Marianne drove us downtown through the slick, rain-slickened city streets to her office at the Mercantile Tower. The high-ceilinged room felt like a fortress against the chaotic world outside.

I sat at the mahogany desk, the heavy blue cloth ledger open beside the silver SanDisk flash drive.

Marianne placed a steaming mug of hot tea between my hands before lowering herself into her leather chair. She clicked a button on her secure desktop terminal, inserting the flash drive into a peripheral reader.

A green LED light blinked on the screen.

DECRYPTING SECURE CONTAINER... ENTER MASTER PASSKEY:

I looked down at the paper envelope my father had left in the floor safe—the one that read, “For Nora. When the light goes out.”

I pulled out the handwritten note inside. Written across the bottom in neat capital letters was an eight-digit alphanumeric code.

I typed the sequence into Marianne’s keyboard.

ACCESS GRANTED.

A directory of thousands of files unspooled across the high-resolution monitor: encrypted PDF spreadsheets, audio recordings, recorded phone calls, and high-definition video files.

Marianne double-clicked the folder labeled AUDIO_ARCHIVE_2026.

A list of audio files populated the screen, each timestamped down to the second. The latest file was dated OCTOBER 8, 2026—11:42 PM—less than twenty-four hours before my parents were killed outside the 4th Street office.

Marianne hit play.

The office speakers filled the quiet room with the sound of rustling paper. Then, my father’s calm, steady voice emerged from the speakers:

“This is David Vance. Record date, October eighth. If this audio is being reviewed by federal authorities, it means the audit file regarding Vance Logistics and Grant Miller’s real estate diversion has been triggered. Celeste believes she has successfully isolated me from my daughter, Nora, but she is unaware that the primary estate documents were placed into an irrevocable trust years ago. Grant has threatened physical action if I do not sign the dissolution waiver tomorrow morning. I am submitting this file to the secure cloud node as an insurance policy. My daughter is the sole beneficiary of everything I built. Protect her.”

The recording clicked off.

The silence in Suite 800 was absolute.

I looked at the computer screen, my reflection staring back at me from the dark glass—tired, bruised, but entirely unbroken.

"He knew," I whispered, tears blurring the edges of the monitor. "He knew what they were planning, and he spent his last days making sure I would be protected."

"Your father was a brilliant man, Nora," Marianne said quietly, resting her hand over mine. "He didn't just build an accounting practice; he built a shield around you that even murder couldn't shatter."
