Chapter 3 - The Escape Through the Tunnels

With Elena’s digital security keycard clutched tightly in my fist and her personal Beretta tucked securely into my waistband, I scooped Grace up into my arms. She was dangerously light, her body trembling with exhaustion and adrenaline, but she wrapped her arms around my neck, burying her face in my shoulder.

"I've got you," I whispered fiercely. "We're almost out of here."

We left my mother locked inside the very prison she had constructed for my wife, her furious shouts muffled by the heavy steel door as the automatic magnetic locks clicked shut behind us.

We didn't head toward the main house or the front courtyards where Elena's loyalists waited. Instead, I navigated the winding, subterranean maintenance corridors of the west wing, guided by childhood memories of exploring the estate's hidden architectural quirks—secrets my grandfather had shared with me before his passing.

At the dead end of a dark corridor lined with old wine racks, I pressed my hand against a concealed stone panel. With a mechanical click, a heavy wooden bookcase swung outward, revealing a dark, stone-paved staircase descending deep into the old family smuggling tunnels that led straight past the estate perimeter out toward the coastal cliffs.

"Dante... where are we?" Grace asked softly, her breath coming in shallow gasps as I carried her down the steps.

"My grandfather's old exit," I explained, keeping my voice low and steady. "It leads out to the old boathouse on the northern cove. From there, we can reach the highway and get you to a proper hospital."

As we descended into the cool, damp darkness of the tunnel, the distant echoes of shouting from the main house began to filter down through the ventilation grates. The estate had discovered Elena was missing. The search parties were already being mobilized.

We had maybe twenty minutes before the guards realized we were heading for the perimeter.

I set Grace down gently against a stone pillar inside the tunnel while I flicked on a heavy-duty tactical flashlight I had grabbed from the security station. I checked her pulse; it was steady, but she was shivering violently from the chill of the subterranean air.

I quickly unzipped my leather jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders, pulling it tight against her fragile frame.

"Can you walk, sweetheart? Just a little bit?" I asked, kneeling beside her. "The path gets narrow and uneven ahead. I need to make sure you're safe."

Grace nodded, her eyes shining with tears of absolute gratitude as she reached out to touch my cheek. "I can walk, Dante. For our son... I can do anything."

We moved through the dark tunnels step by step, my arm securely around her waist, supporting her weight while she leaned against me for strength. Every shadow looked like an enemy ambush; every drip of water echoed like approaching footsteps. But we pushed forward, driven by the sheer, unyielding will to survive and protect the life growing inside her.

After what felt like an eternity of navigating damp stone walls and rusted iron pipes, the faint smell of salt air and ocean breeze hit us from ahead.

The rusted iron grate marking the exit to the northern cove came into view, illuminated by the silvery moonlight reflecting off the crashing waves below.

I stepped up to the rusted padlock securing the grate, pulling Elena's Beretta from my waistband. With a silent prayer and a calculated aim, I fired a single, silenced shot straight into the shackle. The lock shattered into pieces.

I pushed the heavy iron grate open, and the cool night air rushed in, filling our lungs with the sweet scent of freedom.
