Chapter 5 - The Battle for the Heir

Inside the sterile, brightly lit delivery room of Doctor Vance’s secure clinic, the hours blurred into a terrifying, agonizing blur of monitors beeping, sterile instruments clinking, and Grace's fierce, unbroken determination echoing off the walls.
I sat beside her bed, holding her hand so tightly my own fingers went numb, whispering words of encouragement, love, and survival into her ear while Doctor Vance and a trusted nurse worked feverishly to manage the emergency delivery.
"Push, Grace, push!" Doctor Vance commanded, his face beaded with sweat. "He's almost here. I see the head. One more good push!"
Grace screamed, throwing her head back against the pillow as she poured every remaining ounce of her shattered strength into that final effort.
Then, cutting through the sterile tension of the room, a sharp, piercing cry echoed through the air.
A baby's cry—strong, healthy, and full of life.
I stared in absolute disbelief as the nurse lifted a tiny, squirming infant wrapped in a warm blue blanket, immediately placing him gently against Grace's chest.
Grace burst into tears, her hands trembling as she cradled our newborn son, kissing his damp forehead over and over again. "Oh, my baby... my sweet boy. You're safe. Mommy is right here."
I pressed my forehead against hers, tears streaming down my face as I looked down at the tiny miracle we had fought through hell to save. "We did it, Grace. He's here."
But our moment of profound peace was abruptly shattered.
The heavy oak doors of the clinic's front entrance flew open with a deafening crash, followed by the heavy, synchronized boots of armed men marching down the sterile hallway.
My blood ran cold.
I stood up instantly, drawing Elena’s Beretta from my waistband and stepping in front of the delivery room door, flicking off the safety.
"Doctor Vance, lock the interior doors!" I yelled back over my shoulder.
Before the doctor could reach the security panel, the door to the delivery room kicked open with brute force.
Standing in the doorway wasn't a syndicate hitman or one of my mother's foot soldiers.
It was Marcus Vance—head of the rival Vance family, our fiercest enemy across Europe, flanked by four heavily armed guards carrying submachine guns.
My finger tightened on the trigger. "Step back, Marcus. If you take one step closer, I swear to God I'll put a bullet through your skull."
May you like
Marcus raised his hands slowly, a wry, unexpected smile touching his lips. He didn't look like an invader coming to execute us; he looked like a man delivering a long-awaited piece of leverage.
"Put the gun down, Dante," Marcus said calmly, his eyes flicking past me to Grace holding our newborn son on the bed. "I'm not here to kill you. In fact... I'm here to offer you an alliance."
