Part 6: The Truth Buried For Twenty Years

The rain had started by the time we left the estate.

Heavy.

Cold.

Almost like the sky itself was trying to wash away everything that had happened inside those walls.

But some stains don’t disappear.

Some truths are buried too deeply.

Ethan and Caleb were safe.

That was the only reason I could breathe.

My security team had arrived within minutes after Alexander sent the emergency signal. The boys were taken to a secure location with people I trusted.

For the first time that night…

They weren’t surrounded by lies.

But I wasn’t going with them.

Not yet.

Because Victor Hale had taken something else.

The truth.

Alexander sat in the passenger seat beside me.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

The silence between brothers was heavier than any argument.

Finally, he said:

“You should hate me.”

I kept my eyes on the road.

“I do.”

He nodded.

“I deserve it.”

The honesty surprised me.

But it didn’t fix anything.

“You helped them hurt my children.”

His hands tightened.

“I know.”

“You watched.”

“I know.”

“You stood there while Vivian framed Maya.”

His voice cracked.

“I know.”

I pulled the car over.

The rain hit the windshield like bullets.

I turned toward him.

“Then tell me why.”

Alexander looked at me.

And for the first time in my life…

I saw my older brother break.

“Because I was angry.”

A pause.

“Not at you.”

I said nothing.

“At Dad.”

He looked down.

“At everyone.”

He swallowed.

“I spent my whole life feeling like I was invisible.”

“You were the son who got the company.”

“The son everyone trusted.”

“The son everyone expected greatness from.”

His eyes filled.

“And I was just…”

He stopped.

“Just Alexander.”

I looked away.

Because part of me understood.

Not the betrayal.

Not the cruelty.

But the pain.

Then he said something that changed everything.

“I didn’t know Victor was using me.”

I looked back.

“What?”

“I thought he wanted to expose Dad’s secrets.”

“He told me Dad destroyed our family.”

“He told me you knew.”

My heart sank.

“He lied.”

Alexander nodded.

“I know.”

“When did you find out?”

He closed his eyes.

“When I saw the file.”

“What file?”

“The one proving he planned everything.”

The rain continued.

And slowly, Alexander told me the truth.

Years ago, Victor approached him.

Not with threats.

With sympathy.

He told Alexander he was the forgotten son.

The one who deserved justice.

He gave him documents.

Stories.

Evidence.

Enough truth mixed with lies to become believable.

“He knew exactly what to say,” Alexander whispered.

“He knew my weakness.”

I stared ahead.

“That’s what he does.”

Alexander nodded.

“He doesn’t force people.”

“He finds the part of them that’s already broken.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Because it explained everything.

Vivian.

Alexander.

Even my father.

Victor didn’t create monsters.

He found wounded people and pointed them in the right direction.

We arrived at an old property outside the city.

A place my father once owned.

Abandoned for years.

According to Victor’s message, the truth about my mother was here.

The house looked forgotten.

Broken windows.

Overgrown garden.

A graveyard of memories.

Inside, we searched room by room.

Until Alexander stopped.

“There.”

He pointed to the wall.

A hidden door.

Another secret.

Another room.

I opened it.

Inside was not money.

Not documents.

Not weapons.

Just boxes.

Hundreds of them.

I opened the first box.

Letters.

All addressed to me.

From my mother.

My hands froze.

No.

That was impossible.

My mother left.

That’s what everyone told me.

I opened one.

The paper was old.

The handwriting familiar.

A handwriting I had seen on birthday cards as a child.

My dear Amelia,

If you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you.

I couldn’t continue.

My vision blurred.

Alexander quietly stepped away.

Giving me privacy.

For once.

I opened another letter.

Then another.

And the truth came apart piece by piece.

My mother didn’t abandon us.

She had been investigating Victor.

She discovered he had infiltrated my grandfather’s company.

She discovered he had people everywhere.

And then…

She disappeared.

Not because she wanted to.

Because she was forced.

The final letter was dated two days before she vanished.

Daniel,

If anything happens to me, protect Amelia.

Do not let Victor know where she is.

The one person he cannot control is our daughter.

I stopped.

Because the next line destroyed me.

But Daniel must never know the full truth.

I looked up.

“What?”

Alexander moved closer.

“What does it say?”

I read the rest.

Because if Daniel knows what I discovered…

He will go after Victor.

And Victor will kill him.

I felt sick.

My father didn’t abandon us.

He hid.

Because my mother asked him to.

Then I found the final document.

A police report.

Official.

Old.

The truth.

My mother wasn’t dead.

She was alive.

But the report had one more detail.

Location.

A rehabilitation facility.

Under a different name.

My hands shook.

“She’s alive.”

Alexander stared.

“Your mother?”

I nodded.

Before we could say anything else…

The lights in the house turned on.

All of them.

At once.

A voice came from the speakers.

Victor.

“I knew you would find it.”

My blood ran cold.

“Victor!”

A calm laugh.

“Your mother was always the clever one.”

I looked around.

“Where is she?”

His voice answered:

“Close.”

A pause.

“Closer than you think.”

The front door opened.

Slowly.

And standing there…

Was a woman.

Older.

Tired.

But with the same eyes I remembered.

My mother.

Alive.

She looked at me.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Amelia…”

My entire body froze.

Then she whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

A pause.

“But Victor is coming.”

And behind her…

A shadow moved.

Someone stepped inside.

Victor Hale.

Again.

But this time…

He wasn’t smiling.

Because he knew something.

Something that terrified even him.

My mother looked at me.

And said:

“Your father wasn’t the reason our family fell apart.”

She looked at Victor.

“He was.”

Victor’s face changed.

For the first time…

He looked afraid.

May you like

And I knew.

The final secret had just been revealed.
