Part 8: The Final Hunt

The moment I saw Vivian’s name on the security alert, the entire room changed.

The enemy wasn’t standing in front of me anymore.

She was already moving.

Already planning.

Already trying to take what everyone had been fighting over.

My phone kept flashing.

UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED.

MEDICAL ARCHIVE SYSTEM BREACH.

The one place nobody thought to search.

The one place my grandfather hid the truth.

My family’s own medical records.

Charles Whitmore looked at my screen.

And for the first time, his confidence disappeared.

“You have to stop her.”

I looked at him.

The irony was almost unbelievable.

The man who destroyed my family was telling me to protect it.

“Why?”

I asked.

“You’re afraid she’ll get there first?”

His face hardened.

“You don’t understand what she will unleash.”

I laughed coldly.

“Neither do you.”

My mother stepped closer.

“Amelia, listen to me.”

I turned.

“The records are not just documents.”

“What are they?”

She hesitated.

“A key.”

“To what?”

She looked at Charles.

Then Victor.

Then me.

“To everything.”

Before I could ask more, the building shook.

A loud crash echoed from outside.

Everyone froze.

Then another sound.

A car engine.

Fast.

Leaving.

My security team called.

“Sir, someone breached the facility.”

“Who?”

A pause.

“Vivian Hale.”

My jaw tightened.

“She has the boys?”

“No, sir.”

A moment of relief.

“She’s alone.”

But something felt wrong.

Vivian was many things.

Cruel.

Manipulative.

Dangerous.

But she was not reckless.

If she went somewhere alone…

It meant she believed she had the advantage.

“We’re going.”

My mother grabbed my arm.

“No.”

I looked at her.

“She knows you’ll come.”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

“She wants you emotional.”

I nodded again.

“Yes.”

My mother looked at me.

“Then don’t go as a father.”

That stopped me.

“What?”

She held my gaze.

“Go as the man your father raised.”

A silence followed.

Because she was right.

The old me would have charged in.

Angry.

Blind.

But the old me had almost lost everything.

I looked at Alexander.

“Can you access the building systems?”

He nodded.

“I can.”

“Then do it.”

He hesitated.

“You trust me?”

I looked at him.

“No.”

A pause.

“But I trust you want to fix what you broke.”

He accepted that.

Because it was true.

Thirty minutes later, we reached the medical archive facility.

My own building.

My own company.

A place I believed was safe.

The lights inside were off.

The security cameras were frozen.

Someone had taken control.

I walked in slowly.

Alexander behind me.

My mother stayed with the security team.

The hallway was empty.

Too empty.

Then the speakers turned on.

Vivian’s voice filled the building.

“Daniel.”

I stopped.

“Always so predictable.”

I looked at the ceiling.

“Where are you?”

She laughed.

“You sound angry.”

“You should be.”

A pause.

“You lost everything because you wanted to believe people were good.”

I kept walking.

“You framed Maya.”

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

The answer shocked me.

Not because she admitted it.

Because she sounded proud.

“She was protecting my children.”

Vivian laughed softly.

“She was becoming a problem.”

“You know what the problem with loyal people is?”

“They make others feel safe.”

My hands tightened.

“You terrified my sons.”

A pause.

Then her voice became quieter.

“They were never supposed to be afraid of me.”

That sentence confused me.

“What?”

She continued:

“They were supposed to be afraid of losing you.”

I stopped.

Because I understood.

She wasn’t just trying to take my children.

She was trying to break the bond between us.

“You wanted them to hate me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Silence.

Then:

“Because a child who hates their father doesn’t fight for him.”

My blood ran cold.

This was never about custody.

Never about money.

She wanted emotional control.

“Where are the files?”

I asked.

She laughed.

“You still don’t get it.”

“What?”

“The files aren’t the prize.”

The hallway doors suddenly locked.

Behind me.

In front of me.

Trapping us.

Vivian’s voice came again.

“The prize is the password.”

I frowned.

“What password?”

Then the lights turned on.

A screen appeared at the end of the hallway.

A video.

My grandfather.

Old.

Weak.

But alive.

A recording.

My grandfather looked into the camera.

“If you are watching this…”

He paused.

“Then my family has been betrayed.”

My breath stopped.

He continued:

“The person who controls this information cannot be someone who wants power.”

“It must be someone willing to sacrifice everything.”

The video changed.

A fingerprint scanner appeared.

Then a message:

FINAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

My grandfather’s voice continued:

“Only one person can unlock the archive.”

The screen displayed a name.

DANIEL HALE.

I froze.

Because that wasn’t my name.

My father’s name.

My grandfather’s son.

But my father had disappeared.

The system should have been impossible to access.

Then another message appeared.

SECONDARY HEIR REQUIRED.

My stomach dropped.

Secondary heir.

The screen showed another name.

ETHAN AND CALEB HALE.

My children.

Vivian’s voice came through the speakers.

“Now you understand.”

I stared at the screen.

“No…”

“Yes.”

She sounded satisfied.

“Your children are the only way to open it.”

I looked around.

“You don’t have them.”

“No.”

A pause.

“But I know where they are.”

My heart stopped.

The call from security.

The safe location.

Everything.

Someone had leaked it.

Someone had access.

I whispered:

“Who?”

The answer came.

And it destroyed me.

“Your mother.”

I froze.

“No.”

The speakers went silent.

Then a new voice played.

My mother.

“Amelia…”

Her voice shook.

“I’m sorry.”

My entire body went cold.

Because after everything…

After all the betrayal.

After all the lies.

The person I had just found again…

Had taken my children.

Vivian laughed.

“Everyone has a weakness.”

The doors unlocked.

And the final message appeared.

BRING THE CHILDREN.

OR LOSE THE TRUTH FOREVER.

I stood there.

Alone.

Broken.

Because the two people I trusted most…

Had become the two people standing between me and my sons.

May you like

And for the first time in my life…

I didn’t know who I was fighting anymore.
