Chapter 2: The Shattered Illusion of Supremacy

The silence following Darius’s roar was deafening, broken only by Evelyn’s frantic, hyperventilating sobs. Darius carefully lowered Evelyn to the plush Persian rug in the center of the foyer, ensuring her head and neck were supported. He pulled out a specialized encrypted smartphone from his breast pocket, his eyes never leaving the woman in the white blouse standing paralyzed above them.

"Evelyn, breathe," Darius commanded gently, his tone instantly shifting from a lethal roar to a calming, steady anchor. "You are safe. The baby is safe. I have you."

"Cassandra..." Evelyn choked out, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as she pointed a shaking finger upward. "She asked me to look at the new chandelier... and then she put her hands on my back... and she pushed me. Darius, she tried to kill my baby."

"I know," Darius said softly, dialing 911.

Up on the balcony, Cassandra’s mind was short-circuiting. The reality of her failed assassination attempt was crashing down upon her with the force of a freight train. She had spent weeks meticulously planning this. She had hacked the primary ADT security system using passwords she stole from Julian’s home office. She had timed the staff’s departure perfectly. She was supposed to be the grieving sister-in-law, inheriting a fortune. Instead, she was looking down at a federal offense.

"This... this is a misunderstanding!" Cassandra shrieked, her voice cracking in a pathetic attempt to regain control. She leaned over the railing, her face contorted in a mask of manufactured panic. "She slipped! Darius, Evelyn slipped on the marble! I tried to grab her, but she fell!"

Darius placed the phone to his ear. He looked up at the desperate, lying heiress. "Newport Emergency Dispatch, this is Darius Vance, Head of Executive Protection at the Ocean's Crest Estate," he spoke into the phone, his voice echoing loudly in the foyer. "I need an ambulance and a police unit dispatched immediately. We have an attempted homicide on the premises. The assailant is contained."

Cassandra gasped, all the color draining from her perfectly contoured face. "Assailant?! You bald, steroid-injected thug, do you know who I am?! I am Cassandra Sterling! I own half of this estate! You work for me! Hang up that phone right now!"

Darius didn't even blink. He finished relaying the coordinates to the 911 operator, hung up the phone, and stood up, placing his massive frame protectively between Evelyn and the grand staircase.

"You do not own this estate," Darius stated, his voice as cold as liquid nitrogen. "And I work for Julian. My singular directive is the preservation of his wife and child. You just attempted to terminate both. You are not an heiress anymore, Cassandra. You are a biological hazard. And your reign is over."

Cassandra scrambled backward, her high heels clicking frantically against the hardwood floors of the mezzanine. She needed to escape. She needed to get to her Mercedes G-Wagon, drive to T.F. Green Airport, and charter a private flight to a non-extradition country.

But as she spun around to run toward the East Wing exit, the heavy, reinforced oak doors at the end of the hallway suddenly slammed shut, the electronic biometric locks engaging with a loud, definitive click.

Darius held up a small black fob. "The house is on full lockdown, Cassandra. The exterior doors are magnetically sealed. The reinforced glass is shatterproof. You thought you disabled the security grid. You only disabled the civilian system. You are currently trapped in a Class-4 panic room."

The cruel attacker’s arrogant supremacy shattered instantly. She was a rat caught in a multi-million-dollar trap of her own making, forced to stand in the suffocating silence and wait for the sirens of justice to arrive.
