Chapter 11 - THE UNCERTAIN ANCHOR

Adrien sat crossed-legged on the rug in the living room, his knees nearly touching his chin as he pressed two fingers against the cardboard base of Toby’s castle tower.

"Hold it right there," Toby instructed, applying a fresh dab of white glue to a paper towel tube. "If you move even one tiny bit, the whole dragon tower collapses."

"I am completely frozen," Adrien replied softly, keeping his hands utterly still.

Across the room, Nora watched them while folding a basket of warm laundry. Her movements were slow, her mind heavy. The initial wave of raw emotion from the morning had settled into a quiet, complex reality.

Having Adrien back in the cottage wasn't a magic button that erased ninety days of calculated omissions. The truth remained: he was a man who commanded billions, while her entire world was measured in double-shifts and budget spreadsheets.

When Toby finally wandered off to his room to gather his toy knights, Adrien stood up, rubbing his stiff joints.

"I called Harrison this afternoon," Adrien said, stepping into the kitchen where Nora was filling a kettle.

Nora turned, setting the kettle down. "Your assistant?"

"My executive trustee," Adrien corrected gently. "I've instructed my legal team to transfer full voting authority of Cole Capital into a blind management trust. I no longer oversee daily operations, investment decisions, or corporate mergers. I've officially taken an indefinite leave of absence."

Nora stared at him, her grey eyes narrowing slightly. "Adrien... you don't have to dismantle your entire life to prove something to me."

"It isn't a show, Nora," Adrien said, his voice quiet and steady. "I spent fifteen years building an empire because I thought wealth was the only shield that mattered. But when I was sitting in that car outside your house in the freezing rain, I realized that all twelve billion dollars couldn't give me a single minute of what I felt sitting on this floor with you and Toby."

He stepped closer, though he kept a respectful distance, his hands tucked loosely into his pockets.

"I don't expect you to trust me completely today," he added. "I just want the chance to earn it. Without hidden accounts, without secret legal interventions, and without shortcuts."

Nora looked at him for a long moment, the quiet sincerity in his dark eyes cutting through her remaining defenses. She let out a soft sigh.

"Step one," she said, pointing toward the kettle, "is learning how to make tea without asking a butler to fetch the cups."

A small, rare smile broke across Adrien's face. "I can manage that."
