Chapter 8 - THE SHIELDAdrien hadn't intended to intervene. He had been watching from across the street, standing in the shadow of the hardware store awning, just ensuring she and Toby were safe from a distance. But the moment he saw the look of absolute terror on Nora's face, his restraint shattered.

He stepped between David and Nora, his tall, imposing frame completely blocking David from view. He wore his simple canvas jacket, but the look in his dark eyes was pure, lethal calculation—the look of a man who broke multinational corporations for breakfast.

"Step back," Adrien said. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried an authority that made David instantly freeze in his tracks.

David blinked, looking up at Adrien's height, taking in the sharp jawline and the unyielding posture. "Who the hell are you? The billionaire?"

"I am the man telling you to turn around, get back in your car, and drive away," Adrien said quietly, taking a half-step forward. "If you take one more step toward this woman or her son, you will discover precisely what twelve billion dollars can do to a man's legal existence."

David tried to hold his ground, puffing out his chest. "I'm his father! I've got rights!"

"You have six years of unpaid child support, three outstanding warrants for fraud in Indiana, and an illegal vehicle registration sitting on that sedan," Adrien replied without missing a beat, pulling a thin leather notepad from his pocket. "My legal team pulled your record twenty minutes after you crossed the county line, David. If you ever come within five hundred yards of Nora or Toby again, I will personally fund a federal custody and debt recovery lawsuit that will keep you in a courtroom until you're seventy years old."

David's face turned pale. He looked at Adrien, then at Nora, realizing instantly that he was completely outmatched. He spat on the curb, muttered a curse under his breath, and backed into his sedan, slamming the door and speeding off down the street.

Adrien didn't turn around immediately. He took a long, deep breath, trying to steady his pulse, then slowly turned to face Nora.

Nora stood on the sidewalk, holding Toby tight against her side. Her face wasn't relieved. It was tight with a fresh, agonizing wave of betrayal.

"You had his record pulled?" she whispered. "You had your lawyers track him?"

"Nora, he was a threat—"

"You just can't stop, can you?" she cried out, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "You use your money to solve everything! You buy houses, you buy information, you buy protection! You think because you're rich, you get to play God in my life!"

"I just wanted to keep you safe!" Adrien begged, stepping forward, his hands held open.

"I kept us safe for six years without your money!" Nora shouted, her voice echoing down the empty street. "Stay away from us, Adrien! Just leave us alone!"
