Chapter 6 - THE DOCTOR’S SECRET: THE WAITRESS RISKS EVERYTHING TO SAVE TWO MOTHERSAt 11:56 that night, Hannah Moore realized the most dangerous man in the conspiracy had never needed a weapon.

He wore a white coat.

He carried a hospital identification badge.

And he had spent eleven months treating the woman Hannah loved most.

Dr. Nathaniel Bennett.

For nearly a year, Hannah had trusted him.

She had listened as he explained Margaret’s worsening heart condition.

She had worked double shifts to pay for treatments he recommended.

She had thanked him for every reassuring smile.

And now his name appeared on a document authorizing Rebecca’s suspicious transfer.

Hannah stared at the paper.

“No.”

Anthony stood beside her.

Detective Grant examined the signature.

“We need to verify whether this authorization is genuine.”

Hannah shook her head.

“Dr. Bennett knows my mother. He’s her cardiologist.”

Grant looked up.

“That may be significant.”

Anthony’s expression darkened.

“He’s connected to Daniel.”

Hannah felt panic rising.

“My mother is still at St. Catherine’s.”

Grant immediately contacted the hospital.

Hannah could barely breathe.

The receptionist at Rosehaven looked frightened.

“Is something wrong?”

Grant answered calmly.

“We’re investigating an unauthorized patient transfer. Please preserve your records and contact your administrator.”

Anthony turned toward Hannah.

“We’re going back.”

She nodded.

But before they reached the exit, a nurse hurried down the corridor.

“Detective?”

Grant turned.

The nurse was young, perhaps thirty, with tired eyes and a trembling voice.

“My name is Claire Donovan.”

Grant approached.

“Can I help you?”

Claire glanced toward the reception desk.

Then lowered her voice.

“I heard you asking about Rachel Bennett.”

Hannah stepped forward.

“Do you know her?”

Claire nodded.

“I’ve been her night nurse for three years.”

Hannah’s heart pounded.

“Is she Rebecca Hale?”

Claire looked frightened.

“I don’t know her original name. But I know she isn’t supposed to be transferred.”

Grant’s expression sharpened.

“Explain.”

Claire swallowed.

“Rachel has been recovering. For years, she barely spoke. But over the last six months, she’s become much more alert.”

Hannah felt tears gather.

“She can talk?”

Claire nodded.

“She started asking about a daughter.”

Anthony made a strangled sound.

Claire looked at him.

“She said her little girl had dark eyes and a tiny birthmark behind her left ear.”

Hannah instinctively touched her ear.

A small crescent-shaped birthmark rested just beneath her hairline.

Anthony stared.

“Hannah.”

She began crying.

Claire continued.

“Last week, Rachel asked me to help her contact someone named Anthony.”

Anthony covered his face.

“Oh, Rebecca.”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I tried to find him. But the facility administrator told me the patient was confused and that I shouldn’t interfere.”

Grant took notes.

“Who is the administrator?”

“Dr. Nathaniel Bennett.”

Hannah froze.

“Bennett runs this facility?”

Claire nodded.

“He’s the medical director.”

Hannah felt sick.

For eleven months, the same doctor had treated Margaret.

And for years, he had controlled access to Rebecca.

Claire continued.

“Yesterday, Rachel told me she remembered something important.”

“What?” Hannah asked.

“She said the man who had kept her hidden wasn’t her father.”

Anthony looked up sharply.

“What?”

Claire swallowed.

“She said Charles Hale tried to find her before he died. She said someone had been using his name to authorize her confinement.”

Detective Grant frowned.

“Daniel Russo?”

Claire shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Hannah’s mind raced.

Could Daniel have been controlling Rebecca’s life for decades?

Could Dr. Bennett have helped?

Then Claire said something that changed everything.

“Rachel also said there was a baby.”

Hannah stared.

“A baby?”

Claire nodded.

“She said she remembered giving birth to a little girl. But then she kept repeating that there were two.”

Anthony went still.

“Two what?”

Claire looked at Hannah.

“Two babies.”

Silence.

Hannah felt the floor shift beneath her.

“What are you saying?”

Claire shook her head.

“I don’t know. Rachel was distressed. She kept saying, ‘They told me one died, but I heard both crying.’”

Anthony staggered backward.

Hannah stared at him.

“Twins?”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I think that’s what she was trying to tell me.”

Hannah couldn’t speak.

For twenty-four years, she had believed she was Margaret’s biological daughter.

Then she discovered she was Rebecca Hale’s child.

Now there might have been another baby.

Another daughter.

A sister.

Somewhere in the world.

Hannah pressed a hand against her chest.

“Where is Rebecca now?”

Claire shook her head.

“I don’t know. But I saw the vehicle that took her.”

Grant stepped forward.

“Can you describe it?”

“A white medical transport van. No hospital markings.”

“License plate?”

Claire reached into her pocket.

She handed over a folded piece of paper.

“I wrote it down.”

Grant looked at her.

“Why?”

Claire’s voice trembled.

“Because I didn’t trust the men who came for her.”

Hannah grabbed Claire’s hand.

“Thank you.”

The nurse began crying.

“I should have done more.”

Hannah shook her head.

“You did something. That’s what matters.”

Detective Grant immediately transmitted the vehicle information.

Within minutes, an alert was issued.

Then Grant received a call from St. Catherine’s.

She listened.

Her face tightened.

“What do you mean he’s gone?”

Hannah’s heart stopped.

“Who?”

Grant looked at her.

“Dr. Bennett left the hospital two hours ago.”

Hannah swallowed.

“And my mother?”

Grant paused.

“Margaret is still there. She’s stable, and hospital security is with her.”

Hannah exhaled shakily.

But the relief lasted only seconds.

Because if Bennett had disappeared, he knew the conspiracy was collapsing.

And Rebecca was still missing.

They returned to St. Catherine’s just after midnight.

Margaret was awake.

When Hannah entered, her mother immediately reached for her.

“Sweetheart.”

Hannah rushed forward.

“Mom.”

Margaret studied her face.

“What happened?”

Hannah sat beside her.

For several moments, she couldn’t speak.

Then she whispered, “We found Elena.”

Margaret gasped.

“Alive?”

Hannah nodded.

Margaret began crying.

“Oh, thank God.”

Hannah squeezed her hand.

“And we found where Rebecca was being kept.”

Margaret’s expression changed.

“Was?”

Hannah nodded.

“Someone moved her before we arrived.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Oh, Hannah.”

Then Hannah took a breath.

“Mom, did Rebecca have twins?”

Margaret’s eyes flew open.

The silence was immediate.

Hannah felt her stomach tighten.

“You knew?”

Margaret began shaking.

“Hannah—”

“Please.”

Her voice cracked.

“Please don’t hide anything else from me.”

Margaret stared at her daughter.

Then tears spilled down her cheeks.

“Yes.”

Hannah stopped breathing.

“Rebecca gave birth to twin girls.”

Anthony, standing near the doorway, gripped the frame.

Margaret looked toward him.

“Anthony.”

His voice trembled.

“Twins?”

She nodded.

“I didn’t know until Elena found the hospital records.”

Hannah felt tears fall.

“Where is my sister?”

Margaret shook her head.

“We never found her.”

Hannah stared.

“What happened?”

Margaret swallowed.

“The adoption records were altered. Elena found evidence that one baby had been placed with a family in New York. The other was sent somewhere else.”

“Where?”

Margaret’s voice broke.

“We didn’t know.”

Hannah felt as though someone had opened a door beneath her feet.

All her life, she had felt something missing.

A strange emptiness she couldn’t explain.

Now she wondered whether that feeling had a name.

A sister.

A twin.

Someone who might have her face.

Someone who might have spent twenty-four years wondering where she belonged.

Anthony approached slowly.

He looked devastated.

“I had two daughters.”

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.”

Anthony covered his mouth.

For several seconds, he couldn’t speak.

Then he whispered, “And I lost both of them.”

Hannah reached for his hand.

“You found one.”

He looked at her.

She squeezed his fingers.

“And we’re going to find the other.”

Anthony began crying.

He pulled Hannah into his arms.

For the first time, she allowed herself to hug him back.

It felt unfamiliar.

Awkward.

But strangely right.

Across the room, Margaret watched them with tears in her eyes.

Then she smiled.

A small, exhausted smile.

Hannah looked at her.

“What?”

Margaret shook her head.

“Nothing.”

“Mom?”

Margaret’s voice trembled.

“I just wish Elena could see this.”

Hannah smiled through tears.

“She can.”

Margaret’s eyes widened.

Hannah nodded.

“And when this is over, you’re going to see her too.”

For the first time in days, Margaret laughed softly.

But the moment was interrupted by Detective Grant entering the room.

Her expression was serious.

“We found the transport van.”

Hannah stood.

“Rebecca?”

Grant shook her head.

“The van was abandoned near an industrial warehouse in Queens.”

Anthony’s jaw tightened.

“Was anyone inside?”

“No.”

Hannah felt despair rising.

Then Grant continued.

“But the vehicle contained medical supplies, paperwork, and a phone.”

Victor, who had just arrived from Elena’s hospital room, stepped forward.

“Whose phone?”

Grant looked at him.

“Dr. Bennett’s.”

Victor frowned.

“Was he in the van?”

“We don’t know.”

Hannah looked toward the detective.

“Can you trace it?”

“Our team is examining it.”

Grant hesitated.

“There’s something else.”

Everyone waited.

She held up a photograph.

It showed a young woman standing outside a coffee shop.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

A familiar smile.

Hannah stared.

The resemblance was extraordinary.

It was like looking into a mirror.

Except the woman had shorter hair and a small scar above her eyebrow.

Hannah’s breath caught.

“Who is she?”

Grant looked at her.

“Her name is Emily Carter.”

Hannah touched the photograph.

“Emily.”

Anthony stepped closer.

His eyes filled with tears.

“She looks exactly like Rebecca did at twenty-four.”

Hannah felt her chest tighten.

“Where is she?”

Grant hesitated.

“She works at a children’s rehabilitation center in Brooklyn.”

Hannah stared.

“A children’s center?”

Grant nodded.

“And according to the records we’ve found, she was adopted as an infant.”

Hannah’s hands began trembling.

“Is she my sister?”

Grant answered carefully.

“We need DNA confirmation.”

Hannah nodded.

But deep inside, something had already changed.

She looked at the photograph again.

The eyes.

The smile.

The familiar tilt of the head.

Then she noticed something in the background.

A little boy standing beside Emily.

He was holding a stuffed dinosaur.

Green.

Missing one eye.

Hannah’s heart stopped.

“Wait.”

Victor leaned closer.

“What?”

Hannah pointed.

“That toy.”

Victor frowned.

“It looks like Matthew’s.”

Hannah shook her head.

“No. It is Matthew’s.”

Victor stared.

Hannah turned toward Matthew, who had been waiting with his child-care specialist.

“Matthew, sweetheart?”

The boy approached.

“Yes?”

She showed him the photograph.

“Do you know this lady?”

Matthew’s eyes widened.

“Miss Emmy!”

Victor froze.

“What?”

Matthew smiled.

“She used to come to our house.”

Hannah’s pulse accelerated.

“When?”

“Before Mommy went away.”

Victor stared at the photograph.

“Elena knew Emily?”

Matthew nodded.

“Mommy said Miss Emmy was special.”

Hannah looked toward Detective Grant.

“Then Elena found both twins.”

Grant’s expression changed.

Hannah continued.

“She knew where Emily was.”

Anthony stared at the photograph.

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

Victor looked down at Matthew.

“Buddy, did Mommy ever say why Miss Emmy was special?”

Matthew thought carefully.

Then he nodded.

“She said Miss Emmy and Miss Hannah were two pieces of the same heart.”

Hannah covered her mouth.

Tears streamed down her face.

Victor looked stunned.

Anthony sank into a chair.

And suddenly, Elena’s final recording made sense.

She had asked Victor to find Hannah.

But she had never mentioned Emily.

Because Emily might already have been involved.

Hannah stared at the photograph.

Then a terrible possibility occurred to her.

“What if Emily knew?”

Detective Grant looked at her.

“Knew what?”

“That she was my sister.”

Hannah’s voice trembled.

“And what if she was helping Elena?”

Victor slowly nodded.

“That would explain why Elena trusted her around Matthew.”

Anthony looked toward the detective.

“We need to find Emily.”

Grant was already dialing.

But before the call connected, Hannah’s phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

STOP LOOKING FOR YOUR SISTER.

A second message followed.

SHE KNOWS WHAT YOU ARE.

Hannah stared at the screen.

Then a third message appeared.

AND SHE’S THE REASON REBECCA IS STILL ALIVE.

Hannah felt the blood drain from her face.

May you like

Because somewhere in Brooklyn, a woman who looked exactly like her might be hiding the final secret.

And if Richard found her first, Hannah feared she would lose a sister before ever getting the chance to say hello.
