Chapter 7 - THE TWIN SISTER’S SACRIFICE: THE MAFIA BOSS FACES THE ENEMY HE ONCE CALLED FAMILYAt sunrise, Hannah Moore stood outside a small rehabilitation center in Brooklyn, staring through the window at a woman who had her face.

The woman was kneeling beside a little girl in a wheelchair.

She wore pale blue scrubs.

Her dark hair was tied into a loose ponytail.

She was smiling as she helped the child place colorful wooden blocks into a tower.

Hannah felt tears fill her eyes.

For twenty-four years, she had walked through life believing she was an only child.

Now, less than twenty feet away, stood someone who had shared her first heartbeat.

Her twin sister.

Emily Carter.

Anthony stood beside her.

His hands were trembling.

“She looks like Rebecca.”

Hannah nodded.

“She looks like me.”

Victor remained a few steps behind with Detective Grant.

Matthew was safe at the hospital with Elena and Margaret.

Hannah had insisted on coming.

She needed to see Emily herself.

But now that the moment had arrived, she couldn’t move.

“What if she doesn’t want to know me?” Hannah whispered.

Anthony looked at her.

“Then we’ll give her time.”

Hannah swallowed.

“What if she knew about me and never tried to find me?”

Anthony’s expression softened.

“Then we’ll ask why.”

Hannah nodded.

She took one breath.

Then another.

And opened the door.

A small bell chimed overhead.

Emily looked up.

Her smile vanished.

The wooden block slipped from her fingers.

For several seconds, she stared at Hannah.

Then she slowly stood.

“No.”

Hannah stopped.

Emily’s face went white.

“No,” she repeated.

Hannah felt her heart breaking.

“Emily?”

The woman stepped backward.

“How did you find me?”

Hannah swallowed.

“My name is Hannah Moore.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“I know.”

Silence.

Hannah stared.

“You know?”

Emily nodded.

Tears spilled down her cheeks.

“I’ve known about you for six years.”

Hannah felt as though someone had struck her.

“Six years?”

Emily looked toward the little girl.

“Sweetheart, could you go finish your drawing with Miss Claire?”

The child nodded.

Emily waited until she had left.

Then she turned back toward Hannah.

“I wanted to find you.”

Hannah’s voice cracked.

“Then why didn’t you?”

Emily began crying.

“Because Elena told me someone was watching you.”

Anthony stepped forward.

Emily looked at him.

Her face changed.

“Anthony?”

He stopped breathing.

“You know me?”

Emily nodded.

“Elena showed me your photograph.”

Anthony covered his mouth.

“My daughter.”

Emily began sobbing.

He moved toward her.

Then stopped.

“May I?”

Emily nodded.

Anthony embraced her.

Hannah watched as the man who had lost two daughters finally held the second.

For a moment, the room seemed to disappear.

There was only a father.

A daughter.

And twenty-four years of stolen time.

Then Emily reached for Hannah.

Hannah hesitated.

So many questions burned inside her.

Why had Emily remained hidden?

Why had Elena trusted her?

What had she done to keep Rebecca alive?

But when Emily whispered, “I’ve waited my whole life for this,” Hannah couldn’t resist.

She stepped forward.

The sisters embraced.

And something inside Hannah finally settled.

For the first time in her life, she wasn’t searching for the missing piece of herself. She was holding it.

They stood together for a long time.

Neither wanted to let go.

Then Emily pulled back.

“I have so much to tell you.”

Hannah nodded through tears.

“Then start with Rebecca.”

Emily’s expression changed.

She looked toward Detective Grant.

“Is she safe?”

Grant stepped forward.

“We’re trying to locate her.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“Oh, no.”

Hannah felt panic rising.

“Emily, what happened?”

Emily looked at her.

“I’ve been trying to get Rebecca out of Rosehaven for months.”

Anthony stared.

“You knew where she was?”

Emily nodded.

“Elena found me six years ago. She told me about Rebecca, about you, about everything.”

Hannah swallowed.

“Why didn’t she reunite us?”

Emily’s voice trembled.

“Because Daniel threatened to hurt you if she did.”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

Emily continued.

“Elena asked me to help quietly. I became a volunteer at Rosehaven under a different surname.”

Detective Grant frowned.

“Did the staff know?”

“Some did. Dr. Bennett suspected, but I never confirmed anything.”

Hannah stared.

“You were helping our mother?”

Emily nodded.

“I visited her whenever I could. At first, she barely spoke. She’d been given medications that left her confused and exhausted.”

Grant immediately began taking notes.

Emily continued.

“I started documenting everything. The missed appointments. The unusual prescriptions. The restrictions on visitors.”

Hannah felt anger rising.

“And nobody stopped it?”

Emily shook her head.

“Not until I found someone willing to listen.”

“Who?”

Emily hesitated.

“A nurse named Claire Donovan.”

Hannah gasped.

“We met her.”

Emily looked stunned.

“Claire?”

Hannah nodded.

“She helped us.”

Emily began crying.

“Thank God.”

Detective Grant stepped forward.

“Emily, do you know where Rebecca was taken?”

Emily looked frightened.

“I think so.”

Everyone froze.

Hannah grabbed her hand.

“Where?”

Emily swallowed.

“There’s an old private clinic outside the city. Daniel used it years ago.”

Victor’s expression darkened.

“Where?”

Emily gave the address.

Grant immediately contacted her team.

Then Emily looked at Hannah.

“There’s something else.”

Hannah felt a chill.

“What?”

Emily reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small notebook.

Its cover was faded.

Its pages were filled with handwriting.

“This belonged to Elena.”

Victor stared.

“Where did you get it?”

Emily looked at him.

“She gave it to me before she disappeared.”

Victor reached for it.

Emily hesitated.

“There’s something inside you need to understand.”

Hannah looked at her.

“What?”

Emily opened the notebook.

On the first page was a photograph.

Victor Davis.

Younger.

Standing beside Richard Vale.

Both men were smiling.

Below the photograph, Elena had written:

THE MAN I MARRIED AND THE MAN WHO TAUGHT HIM TO BE FEARED.

Victor stared at the words.

His face changed.

Emily continued.

“Elena believed Richard wasn’t only stealing money.”

Victor looked up.

“What else?”

“He was deliberately making your businesses more dangerous.”

Victor frowned.

Emily pointed toward several pages.

“He arranged disputes. He created threats. He convinced you that violence and intimidation were the only ways to survive.”

Victor looked devastated.

Emily continued.

“He wanted you isolated. Dependent on him. Afraid to trust anyone else.”

Hannah watched Victor carefully.

For years, he had been feared across New York.

But perhaps the man he believed himself to be had been shaped by someone who profited from his worst decisions.

Victor sat slowly.

“Elena tried to tell me.”

Emily nodded.

“She wrote that you were becoming someone you didn’t want to be.”

Victor covered his face.

“I didn’t listen.”

Hannah stepped closer.

“Then listen now.”

Victor looked up.

She met his eyes.

“You can’t change what happened before. But you can decide what kind of father Matthew has tomorrow.”

Victor stared at her.

Then nodded.

“You’re right.”

Detective Grant’s phone rang.

She answered.

Listened.

Then turned toward the group.

“We’ve located the clinic.”

Hannah stood.

“And Rebecca?”

Grant hesitated.

“There’s a patient matching her description.”

Anthony grabbed his coat.

“We’re going.”

Grant raised a hand.

“Not yet. Officers are securing the property.”

Hannah felt panic rising.

“What if Daniel moves her again?”

Grant met her eyes.

“We’re acting as quickly as we can without putting her in more danger.”

Emily looked toward the detective.

“There’s a rear service entrance. It leads to the medical wing.”

Grant immediately relayed the information.

Then her radio crackled.

A voice came through.

“Detective, we’ve located Dr. Bennett.”

Grant straightened.

“Status?”

“He’s inside the clinic. He’s cooperating.”

Hannah frowned.

“Cooperating?”

The voice continued.

“He says he wants to make a statement.”

Victor’s expression darkened.

“Now he wants to talk?”

Grant raised a hand for silence.

The officer continued.

“He claims Daniel Russo threatened his family. Says he was forced to sign the transfer papers.”

Hannah stared.

“Is he telling the truth?”

Grant answered carefully.

“We’ll investigate.”

Then another message came through.

“Detective, we found the patient.”

Anthony stopped breathing.

Hannah gripped Emily’s hand.

The officer continued.

“Female, approximately fifty years old. Conscious. Asking for her daughters.”

Hannah began crying.

Emily covered her mouth.

Anthony sank into a chair.

Victor closed his eyes.

For one extraordinary moment, hope filled the room.

Then the officer spoke again.

“Detective, we have another problem.”

Grant frowned.

“What?”

“Daniel Russo is on the property.”

Victor’s face hardened.

“Where?”

The officer hesitated.

“He’s barricaded himself in an administrative office.”

Grant immediately began coordinating the response.

Hannah looked toward Anthony.

His expression was devastated.

“My brother.”

Emily touched his arm.

Anthony looked at her.

“He destroyed everything.”

Hannah squeezed his hand.

“Then let the police stop him.”

Anthony nodded slowly.

Victor looked toward the detective.

“I can speak to him.”

Grant shook her head.

“That’s not advisable.”

Victor met her eyes.

“He trusts his ability to manipulate me. He may listen long enough to surrender.”

Grant considered.

Then said, “Any contact will be supervised.”

Victor nodded.

A few minutes later, Grant arranged a secure phone connection.

Daniel answered.

“Victor.”

Victor’s voice was calm.

“It’s over.”

Daniel laughed.

“You always were dramatic.”

“The police have the records. Elena is alive. Rebecca has been found.”

Silence.

Then Daniel said, “Elena.”

Victor closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Daniel’s voice changed.

“She was supposed to stay hidden.”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

“You stole two years of her life.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“I gave you an empire.”

Victor looked toward Hannah.

Then Anthony.

Then Emily.

“No,” he said quietly. “You gave me a prison and convinced me it was a kingdom.”

Daniel fell silent.

Victor continued.

“I trusted you.”

“You needed me.”

“I thought I did.”

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“You’ll lose everything without me.”

Victor looked toward the window.

Morning sunlight spilled across the floor.

He thought of Matthew.

Of Elena.

Of Hannah carrying a slice of chocolate cake through a devastated restaurant.

Then he answered.

“If keeping my empire means losing my family, then I don’t want the empire.”

Daniel said nothing.

Victor continued.

“Come out. Tell the truth. Let this end.”

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then Daniel whispered, “You don’t understand what I’ve done.”

Victor’s expression changed.

“What?”

Daniel laughed softly.

“You think this is about money?”

Victor frowned.

“What else would it be?”

Daniel’s voice became bitter.

“It’s about the one thing you took from me.”

Victor stared at the phone.

“What did I take?”

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

“Elena.”

Victor stopped breathing.

Hannah looked up sharply.

Daniel continued.

“She was supposed to marry me.”

Victor’s face went white.

Anthony stared at the phone.

“What?”

Daniel laughed.

“Before you ever met her, Victor. Before she became your wife. I loved her.”

Victor shook his head.

“Elena never mentioned you.”

“Because she chose you.”

The bitterness in Daniel’s voice was unmistakable.

“She chose a man who had nothing. A man I helped build. And then she looked at me as though I was beneath her.”

Hannah felt sick.

Daniel continued.

“So I made sure you became exactly what she feared.”

Victor closed his eyes.

“You destroyed our marriage because she didn’t love you?”

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“I destroyed the lie she believed about you.”

Victor shook his head.

“No.”

He looked toward Hannah.

Then said quietly:

“You destroyed lives because you couldn’t accept that love isn’t something you can own.”

Silence.

Then Daniel whispered, “You always did think you were better than me.”

Victor answered, “No. I spent years becoming worse.”

A long pause followed.

Then the phone disconnected.

Detective Grant immediately contacted the officers.

Seconds passed.

Then a voice came through.

“Suspect is exiting the office.”

Hannah stopped breathing.

Another pause.

Then:

“Hands visible. No weapon observed.”

Grant closed her eyes.

“Proceed.”

A moment later, the radio crackled again.

“Daniel Russo is in custody.”

Hannah began crying.

Anthony embraced both daughters.

Victor sank into a chair.

For the first time in decades, the man who had controlled their lives was no longer controlling the ending.

But just as Hannah began to believe the nightmare was over, Detective Grant received another call.

She listened carefully.

Then looked toward Victor.

“There’s something else.”

Victor frowned.

“What?”

Grant hesitated.

“Daniel has offered information about Elena’s accident and the financial crimes.”

Victor nodded.

“Good.”

“But he’s also made a claim about Matthew.”

Hannah felt cold.

“What claim?”

Grant looked toward the family.

“He says Matthew isn’t Victor’s biological son.”

Silence.

Victor stared at her.

Then he slowly shook his head.

“No.”

Hannah looked at Emily.

Emily’s face had gone pale.

Anthony closed his eyes.

And suddenly, the greatest secret of all was no longer about Hannah’s past.

It was about the six-year-old boy whose desperate scream had started everything.
