Chapter 3 - The Gathering StormThe backstage area behind the Grand Ballroom was a labyrinth of black velvet curtains, heavy electrical cables, and nervous anticipation. Stage managers whispered into headset microphones, nervous donors adjusted their black-tie gowns, and catering staff rushed past carrying trays of half-eaten hors d'oeuvres.

Standing near the wings, looking every bit the picture of angelic perfection, was Dr. Andrew Vaughn.
He wore a custom-tailored Brioni tuxedo that fit his broad, athletic frame impeccably. His silver-streaked hair was neatly styled, his smile was dazzling, and he was currently holding court with the city’s chief health commissioner and two prominent pharmaceutical executives, laughing charmingly at a polite joke about hospital administration.
As I walked out of the elevator trailing a few steps behind Ethan, Andrew’s eyes flicked over the crowd and landed on me.
For a fraction of a second, the warm, charming smile faltered. His eyes narrowed with a sharp, warning flash—a silent, lethal reminder of what awaited me the moment we got back behind closed doors. It was a look designed to make my stomach drop, a chilling reminder of the invisible leash he kept wrapped around my neck.
I forced my posture to straighten, hiding my trembling hands inside the pockets of my blazer, and walked toward the control console where the event run-of-show was displayed.
"Ava," Andrew purred smoothly, excusing himself from the commissioners and walking over to me with long, graceful strides. He slid a heavy hand around my waist, pulling me against his side with casual, public ownership. The long fingers of his right hand pressed directly over the bruised ribs beneath my blouse, applying just enough invisible pressure to make me gasp softly in pain.
"You're late getting downstairs, darling," Andrew whispered in my ear, his voice dripping with syrupy sweetness that made my skin crawl, while his smile remained fixed for the passing photographers. "I told you to be ready in the suite by seven. Don't embarrass me tonight. Not when the mayor is presenting my award."
"I had... work to finish for Mr. Carter," I whispered, staring straight ahead at the wall.
Andrew’s fingers tightened on my ribs, a vicious little squeeze that brought tears to my eyes. "Your only job tonight is looking like my adoring fiancée. Smile for the cameras, Ava. Or you'll regret it before morning."
Before I could choke out a reply, a warm, heavy hand gripped Andrew’s wrist and casually, effortlessly peeled his fingers away from my waist.
Andrew blinked in surprise, turning his head sharply.
Ethan Carter stood between us.
He hadn't raised his voice, and his expression was completely devoid of hostility, but the sheer physical presence of the billionaire made Andrew instinctively take a half-step back.
"Dr. Vaughn," Ethan said, his voice smooth, resonant, and dripping with polite venom. "I trust you're enjoying the evening?"
Andrew quickly recovered his charming, deferential smile, extending a hand toward Ethan. "Mr. Carter! It’s an honor, sir. I was just telling the commissioner how grateful the Children's Heart Hospital is for your foundation's three-million-dollar endowment tonight. It’s going to fund our new pediatric surgical wing."
Ethan looked down at Andrew’s outstretched hand for a long, agonizing moment before slowly raising his own hand to adjust his cuffs—leaving Andrew’s hand hanging awkwardly in the air.
A flush of dark embarrassment crept up Andrew’s neck, though he quickly forced a tight, polite laugh to cover the snub. "Ah, busy man, I understand. The speech must be nerve-wracking."
"Not at all, Doctor," Ethan replied calmly, his dark gray eyes locking onto Andrew with an intensity that made the surgeon’s smile falter. "In fact, I've just finished revising my remarks. I realized the original draft didn't properly emphasize the... true nature of the heroes we are honoring tonight."
Andrew’s eyes flickered with a sudden, unidentifiable flash of unease. "Oh? I’m sure whatever you say will be wonderful, sir. The hospital board is certainly excited to hear your vision."
"I'm sure they are," Ethan murmured softly. He turned his gaze toward me, his expression softening just a fraction before he looked back at Andrew. "Ava, fetch my tablet from the podium. We need to verify the slide deck sequence before the curtain goes up."
"Right away, Mr. Carter," I whispered, eager for any excuse to escape the suffocating tension between the two alpha males.

As I hurried toward the side stairs leading up to the stage, I glanced back over my shoulder. Ethan was standing inches from Andrew, whispering something low and deliberate into the surgeon's ear—something that made all the color drain instantly from Andrew's handsome face.
The trap was set. And there was no turning back.
