Chapter 6 - The Fall of the MonsterWithin ninety seconds of the evidence hitting the screens, the Grand Ballroom erupted into a roaring storm of outrage, flashing camera shutters, and frantic whispering.

Two uniformed NYPD officers, accompanied by plainclothes detectives from the special victims unit who had apparently been waiting discreetly in the corridor on Ethan's prior instruction, walked purposefully down the center aisle of the ballroom.

They bypassed the terrified donors, walked straight past the trembling hospital executives, and stopped directly in front of Dr. Andrew Vaughn.

"Dr. Andrew Vaughn?" the lead detective asked, his voice calm and professional. "You need to come with us."

Andrew stood up, his legs shaking so violently he nearly tripped over his own custom-tailored trousers. He looked around the room, desperately searching for a sympathetic face among the hundreds of people who had been praising him just ten minutes ago. Every single person turned away. The high-society donors leaned back in their chairs, avoiding his gaze as if he carried a contagious plague. Even the pharmaceutical executives pushed their chairs back to put distance between themselves and the disgraced surgeon.

"This is a mistake! It's a conspiracy!" Andrew stammered, his voice cracking into a desperate, pathetic whine as the detective firmly gripped his arm. "Mr. Carter is framing me! He's mentally unstable—!"

The click of steel handcuffs snapping around Andrew’s wrists cut off his frantic excuses.

As the officers escorted him up the center aisle—the exact same path he had walked earlier with a king's arrogance—reporters swarmed around them like a pack of wolves, microphones thrust into his face, flashbulbs blinding him against the dark background.

I watched from the shadows of the wings, my breath catching in my throat as the man who had terrorized my life for months was hauled away in disgrace. The invisible chains wrapped around my chest suddenly snapped. The weight that had crushed my lungs for half a year vanished into thin air.

I wasn't invisible anymore. I wasn't trapped.

When the doors finally swung shut behind Andrew and the police escort, a heavy, exhausted calm settled over the ballroom.

Ethan stood at the podium for a long moment, his eyes scanning the quiet, stunned crowd before turning his gaze toward the wings. He dropped the microphone into its cradle, stepped away from the podium, and walked off the stage directly toward me.

The guests were still whispering frantically among themselves, but nobody dared approach the stage. The Carter Foundation gala had just become the biggest scandal in New York City history, and everyone knew who was standing at the center of it.

Ethan stopped right in front of me.

His dark gray eyes searched my face, softening with a deep, infinite tenderness that contrasted sharply with the ruthless titan who had just destroyed a man's life on live television.

"Are you okay?" he asked softly, his voice barely above a whisper.

I looked up at him, tears of overwhelming relief streaming freely down my cheeks—not hiding behind foundation, not choked back by fear.

"I'm free," I whispered, my voice breaking. "Ethan... I'm actually free."

Without hesitation, Ethan reached out and pulled me into his arms. He wrapped his strong, protective arms around my back, carefully avoiding my bruised ribs, and buried his face in my hair. I clutched the lapels of his shirt, burying my face against his chest, finally letting go of every ounce of trauma, fear, and heartbreak I had carried in silence for eleven months.

Around us, the ballroom began to empty as shocked guests hurried toward the exits to call reporters and post breaking news on social media. But inside that little circle of warmth and strength in the wings of the stage, the rest of the world ceased to exist.

Ethan kissed the top of my head, his arms tightening around me as if he would never let go.

"You were never alone, Ava," he murmured against my hair. "And you never will be again."
