Chapter 3 – The Cost of Silence

Emergency surgeons worked for nearly four hours.
Outside the operating room, Harrison stood without moving.
Richard arrived thirty minutes later.
His expensive suit was wrinkled.
His face had lost all color.
"I need to see my wife."
Harrison slowly turned.
"No."
"You're the reason she's behind those doors."
Richard lowered his head.
"I never wanted this."
"You wanted everything else," Harrison answered.
"The affair."
"The money."
"The lies."
"You just never expected someone else to pay the price."
A surgeon finally emerged.
"The mother survived."
Both men closed their eyes.
"The baby survived."
Only then did Harrison breathe again.
Richard quietly cried into his hands.
It was the first genuine emotion Harrison had seen from him in years.
But remorse could not erase evidence.
The district attorney filed criminal charges against Vanessa before sunrise.
