Chapter 1 - The Stain on the Marble and the Shadow of the OutfitThe air inside the Bennett estate’s private ballroom always smelled faintly of floor wax and buried secrets.

Mrs. Bennett, the mansion’s notoriously unforgiving housekeeper, had dropped the bucket at Elena's feet earlier that morning, pointing a manicured nail at the floor without offering a single word of explanation.
“Make it disappear before I come back.”
That was all she said. No context, no apology, no questions asked. Nobody in that sprawling, palatial fortress ever asked where the blood came from. The maids, the cooks, and the estate groundskeepers all shared a silent, unspoken understanding: people who valued their longevity kept their mouths shut, their eyes lowered, and their questions buried deep.
Six months prior, Elena would have recoiled in absolute horror at the mere thought of kneeling on a cold marble floor, scrubbing another man's blood. Life had once been predictable, safe, and sheltered. But life had a cruel habit of shattering overnight. At twenty-four, with no college degree, no professional references, and a two-year-old daughter named Lily waiting for her in a cramped, drafty apartment across the city, pride was a useless commodity. She couldn't feed her daughter on pride. She couldn't pay for Lily's respiratory medication with self-respect.
Elena gritted her teeth, throwing her weight into the brush until the cracked, bleeding skin across her knuckles split open once more, leaking crimson droplets into the gray cleaning water.
“It’s still not clean.”
The quiet, baritone voice materialized out of nowhere, stopping Elena’s breath entirely.
She hadn't heard footsteps. The thick Persian rugs in the adjacent corridor swallowed sound, but this felt different—almost predatory.
“I... I'm sorry, sir,” Elena stammered, keeping her gaze locked firmly on the floorboards, too terrified to move. “I'll keep trying. Give me five minutes.”
The silence that followed stretched out, thick and heavy, until it became practically unbearable. The air pressure in the room seemed to shift, growing suffocatingly dense.
“Look at me.”
It wasn't a request. It was an absolute command that carried the quiet, undeniable weight of supreme authority.
Elena slowly, reluctantly raised her head.
The man standing over her didn't need an introduction. Even among the lowest-ranking domestic staff, his reputation preceded him like a dark omen.
Vincent Moretti.
His name traveled through the sprawling mansion only in hushed, nervous whispers. The veteran guards lowered their voices whenever they mentioned him, and even Mrs. Bennett walked with a straighter, stiffer spine when he was on the property. Rumor—and reality—dictated that Vincent controlled the entire financial and criminal underworld across Chicago, commanding men who could disappear a person without a trace and who never flinched at violence.
He was dressed impeccably in a charcoal three-piece suit that fit his broad shoulders with tailored precision. His dark hair was combed back, touched with silver at the temples, and his piercing gray eyes held the cold, calculating focus of a apex predator.
Two armed guards stood a few paces behind him, blocking the exits. One of them studied Elena with clinical detachment, his hand resting casually inside his jacket near his holster, watching every micro-movement she made.
“I'm sorry,” Elena repeated, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to steady it.
Instead of barking an order or criticizing her work, Vincent’s gaze dropped downward. He wasn't looking at the stain on the marble. He was staring directly at Elena’s hands.
Bright red blood was mixing with the dirty gray water dripping from the bristles of the brush.
“Stand.”
Elena obeyed instantly, her muscles aching as she pushed herself upright. But as she straightened, her left sleeve—frayed from months of relentless wear—caught sharply on the jagged metal handle of the bucket with a sudden, vicious rip.
Riiiiip.
The dark cotton fabric tore all the way up to her shoulder, sliding violently above her elbow.
In a fraction of a second, years of carefully guarded secrets were ripped away into the open air.
Every single scar was instantly exposed to the harsh overhead lighting of the ballroom.
Thin, silvery-white surgical lines crisscrossed her forearm like a roadmap of trauma. Raised, jagged welts marked the skin where heavy objects had struck her flesh in the past. And wrapping entirely around her slender wrist like a permanent, inescapable shackle was a thick, discolored burn scar—a cruel reminder of a night she had spent years trying to forget.
No one spoke.
Behind Vincent, one of the guards muttered a sharp, involuntary curse under his breath. The other guard instantly looked away, breaking protocol out of sheer, instinctive discomfort.
Vincent Moretti didn't look away.
Before Elena could wrench her arm back or pull the torn fabric down to hide her shame, Vincent stepped forward. Moving with a strange, unnatural gentleness, he reached out and carefully took her ruined wrist in his large, warm hand. He held it with an infinite care—almost as though he was terrified that applying even an ounce of pressure would hurt her all over again.
His dark thumb hovered precisely over the worst part of the burn scar, tracing its outline without a word.
When he finally lifted his gaze to meet hers, something deep inside his expression fractured. The cold, unyielding mask of the Chicago mafia boss vanished, replaced by a sudden, terrifying surge of dark, concentrated fury.
His voice, when he spoke, remained chillingly calm. That quiet control made it a thousand times more terrifying than a shout.
“Who did this to you?”

Before Elena could find her voice to answer—before she could formulate a lie to protect herself—the heavy mahogany front doors of the mansion swung open with a resounding crash.
The man responsible for her nightmares walked inside, wearing the exact same arrogant, self-satisfied smile that had haunted her sleep for years, completely convinced that no one in that house—not even the infamous Moretti—could ever stand against him.
