Chapter 3 - The Ultimate UltimatumThe suffocating tension in the ballroom was so thick it felt tangible. Arthur Vance was dangling like a broken ragdoll in Vincent Moretti’s grip, his eyes bulging with sheer terror as the oxygen slowly faded from his brain.

“V-Vincent... please... we can make a deal,” Arthur wheezed out, his voice cracking into a pathetic, high-pitched squeak. “The dock warehouses... the municipal permits... I'll sign them all over to the Outfit! Free of charge! Just—just let me breathe!”

Vincent’s expression didn't flicker with even a hint of greed. To a man who owned half the city of Chicago, a municipal permit was worth less than the dirt on his Italian leather shoes.

“You think your miserable little contracts buy forgiveness for what you did under my roof?” Vincent’s voice dropped into a register so cold it sent a shiver down Elena’s spine.

Before Vincent could snap Arthur’s neck like a dry twig, Elena found her voice.

“Vincent... wait.”

The mafioso paused. He glanced back over his shoulder, his piercing gray eyes softening infinitesimally as they landed on her pale face. “You want him to walk, Elena? Say the word, and he feeds the fish in Lake Michigan before midnight.”

“No,” Elena whispered, stepping forward. She pulled the torn remnants of her sleeve down, trying vainly to shield her scarred arm from view. “Not here. Not in the house. If you kill him now, the Bennett estate will clean up the mess and sweep it under the rug. He doesn't deserve a quiet death.”

Arthur gasped for air, his eyes darting wildly toward Elena. “Elena... honey... please... think of Lily! Think of our daughter!”

The moment Arthur invoked Lily’s name, something snapped inside Elena. The fearful, cowering girl vanished, replaced by a mother whose protective instincts burned brighter than any threat.

“Don't you ever mention my daughter,” Elena snarled, her voice trembling with a sudden, venomous rage that startled even the armed guards. “You sold her toys to buy whiskey! You locked her in a dark closet when she cried! You don't get to use her name to save your skin!”

Vincent looked at Elena with a new level of respect. A faint, grim smirk touched the corner of his mouth. He liked a survivor with teeth.

With a look of sheer disgust, Vincent hurled Arthur across the room. Arthur crashed hard against a mahogany display cabinet, shattering the glass panels into a thousand glittering shards before collapsing into a groaning heap on the hardwood floor, coughing and gasping for breath.

“Get him out of my sight,” Vincent commanded without looking back.

The two armed guards moved in instantly, grabbing Arthur roughly by his arms and dragging him out of the ballroom toward the service exits, leaving a trail of whimpered pleas behind them. The visiting associate who had tried to intervene bolted out the front doors before anyone could look his way.

Silence descended upon the ballroom once more.

Vincent turned around, slowly closing the distance between himself and Elena. He stopped a foot away, his tall frame towering over her.

“You're coming with me,” Vincent said, stating it not as an invitation, but as an unchangeable law of nature.

Elena stepped back, shaking her head rapidly. “I can't. I have a job... I have a daughter across town—at my apartment—”

“Your job here is finished, Elena. Permanently,” Vincent interrupted smoothly. He reached out, gently catching her elbow—avoiding the scars this time—and guided her firmly toward the private elevator at the back of the estate. “And as for your daughter, my men picked her up and brought her to a secure townhouse twenty minutes ago. She’s eating strawberries and watching cartoons with a nanny who actually knows how to smile.”

Elena stopped dead in her tracks, her breath hitching in her throat. “You... you took Lily?!”

“I kept her safe,” Vincent corrected firmly, looking down into her terrified eyes with absolute sincerity. “Because men like Arthur Vance don't just abuse their wives—they use children as leverage when they get desperate. You and your daughter are coming under my protection, Elena. Whether you want it or not.”
