Chapter 23 - MICHAEL YEARS LATER

Michael never remarried.

Not because he spent life pining.

He dated.

Worked.

Changed.

Our co-parenting became boring.

Schedules.

School events.

Medical appointments.

Graduations.

At fifty-two he asked me one question over coffee.

“Do you think I married you for the Hayes structure?”

“No.”

He looked surprised.

“I think your parents understood the financial connection before we did. I think you learned parts and chose not to ask enough. But I believe you loved me.”

His eyes filled.

“Does that make it better?”

“No.”

It made it accurate.

He nodded.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

No reconciliation.

No romantic second chance.

A man could love me, betray me, change, remain our daughters’ father, and still not become my husband again.

That complexity became peaceful eventually.
