Michael did not deny it.

He looked at the table.
“Yes.”

“Did you verify?”

“Why?”
“She said Michael handled Emily.”

“I signed the supporting packet.”

Naomi looked at him.
“Mr. Carter, at some point not reading becomes evidence of how willing you were not to know.”
He cried.

Not punishment.
Reality.
Then he said:
“Dad told me if the Hayes structure wasn’t treated as integrated, the refinancing would need outside beneficiary approval.”
“What outside approval?” I asked.
He looked at me.
“I don’t know.”
