Chapter 10 - A New HorizonThe morning of my departure for Washington, D.C., was cool and clear.

I stood in the arrivals terminal of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, waiting for my flight to be called. I wore a tailored charcoal wool coat over a navy silk blouse, my hair styled neatly, carrying my leather portfolio in one hand and a fresh cup of airport coffee in the other.
My phone vibrated in my coat pocket.
I pulled it out and saw a text message from a secure, unlisted government number—Special Agent Laura Mitchell.
"Trial dates for the Bennett-Vance syndicate have been officially set for early spring," the text read. "Federal prosecutors are confident in a maximum twenty-year sentence without parole. You did good work, Emily. Enjoy D.C."
I typed a brief, steady reply: "Thank you, Agent Mitchell. Let me know when the gavel drops."
I locked my phone, slipped it back into my pocket, and looked up at the departure board.
Flight 404 to Washington Dulles — On Time — Boarding Gate 14.
For twenty-seven years, I had lived under the shadow of a fraudulent family, carrying the weight of crimes I never committed, enduring abuse disguised as parenting, and believing that my future belonged to people who only wanted to use me as a shield.
They thought they had destroyed my dreams forever when my father smashed my laptop against the kitchen floor.
Instead, that single act of violence had shattered the illusion once and for all, forcing me to pick up the pieces, dial the police, and audit the entire rotten foundation of my past.

The gate agent's voice echoed over the terminal intercom:"Now boarding First Class and Priority passengers for Flight 404 to Washington, D.C..."
I picked up my carry-on bag, squared my shoulders, and walked proudly down the jetway toward the open door of the aircraft, stepping out into a future that belonged entirely to me.
