Chapter 4 - The DelugeThe first notification was a text from my father.

Dad (2:03 PM): What is this legal notice? Call us immediately.
Ten seconds later, my mother.
Mom (2:03 PM): Emma, you can’t do this. This is our home. What did you do???
Then Lena.
Lena (2:04 PM): You’re insane. You are literally insane. You’re ruining everything. CALL DAD NOW.
I didn't answer. I didn't type a single letter. I simply locked the screen, set the phone down on the teak table, and picked up a tortilla chip dipped in fresh guacamole.
Back in the Bellevue dining room, as I would later piece together from Marcy’s follow-up report and my mother’s hysterical voicemails, the scene was catastrophic.
Julian Thorne and his wife had been sitting at the head of the table, admiring the silver stemware and sipping a 2018 Napa Cabernet that Lena had put on her credit card. Lena was halfway through explaining her vision for "boutique architectural staging" when my father walked back into the dining room.
He wasn't holding his scotch anymore. He was holding the white parchment document from Alden & Sterling.
His face was the color of curdled milk.
“Richard?” my mother had asked, her voice light, trying to maintain the sophisticated hostess facade in front of the Thornes. “Who was at the door?”
My father didn't answer her. He stood at the edge of the mahogany table, his thumb trembling as he flipped to the third page of the document—the page containing his own notarized signature from six months ago, highlighted in bright yellow ink by Marcy’s paralegal.
NOTICE OF TITLE TRANSFER & EVICTION DEMAND
Pursuant to the Vance Family Revocable Trust Master Agreement dated May 24th, 2026, notice is hereby given that full legal and equitable title of the real property situated at 1402 Cedar Crest Way, Bellevue, WA, has transferred in fee simple to Emma Vance due to total non-performance of financial cures.
Occupants Richard Vance and Eleanor Vance are hereby ordered to surrender possession and vacate the premises within thirty (30) calendar days...
Lena had snapped.
She had snatched the papers right out of my father’s hands, her eyes racing frantically across the legal text. When she saw the words 100% OWNERSHIP: EMMA VANCE and DEMAND FOR VACATION OF PREMISES, her sophisticated hostess persona collapsed like a house of paper in a hurricane.
“What is this?!” Lena had shrieked, forgetting entirely that the most powerful real estate mogul in Seattle was sitting three feet away from her. “Dad! What did you sign?!”
Julian Thorne, a man who read real estate contracts for a living, had slowly set his wine glass down onto the ivory tablecloth. His sharp grey eyes had locked onto the bold seal of Alden & Sterling at the top of the page.
He knew that seal. Everyone in Seattle real estate knew that seal.
My phone chimed again.
It wasn't a text this time. It was an incoming call from Lena.
I let it ring until it went to voicemail.
Three seconds later, a red notification badge appeared on my phone screen: New Voicemail (1).
I tapped the speaker icon and held the phone to my ear, listening to my sister’s voice through the warm, sunny ocean breeze.
Her voice was no longer polished. No sophisticated-hostess tone. No careful, superior family smile.
Just raw, unadulterated panic.
“Emma! Call me right now! What the hell did you serve Dad?! You need to call this lawyer and stop this right now before everyone finds out! Julian is sitting right here! Call me back!”
I deleted the voicemail without saving it.
I took a slow drink of my mezcal, looking out at the turquoise waves crashing against the dramatic white rocks of Cabo.
Then, a final text message appeared on my screen.
It was from my father.
May you like
Unlike Lena’s hysterical paragraphs or my mother’s pleading sentences, my father’s message contained only five words.
Dad (2:08 PM): Please... where are you, Emma?
