Chapter 6 - The Morning After

The tropical morning in Cabo San Lucas arrived in shades of blinding gold and sapphire blue. I woke up at 7:00 AM, my mind remarkably clear, feeling refreshed for the first time in years.
After ordering a pot of dark Mexican roast coffee and fresh tropical fruit to my terrace, I pulled out my laptop and re-enabled my cell network, leaving my family’s numbers blocked while keeping line access open for Marcy Alden.
My inbox lit up immediately. At 7:15 AM PST, Marcy had sent a comprehensive briefing detailing the service execution and the initial legal fallout.

Emma,
Process server Marcus confirmed personal hand-delivery at 1:58 PM PST yesterday. Per our protocol, the formal Notice of Title Transfer and 30-Day Demand for Possession has been recorded with King County.
Your father called our emergency line four times last night between 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM. Your sister left a message threatening a lawsuit for tortious interference and emotional distress. I have already issued a formal litigation hold letter to her and informed her that any further unrepresented communication will be documented for court sanctions.
You are officially the sole recorded deed-holder of the Bellevue estate. The 30-day clock to vacate began yesterday at 2:00 PM.
Let me know how you wish to proceed with the listing agents or property management team.
Best,
Marcy
I took a slow sip of coffee, watching a sailboat glide across the ocean horizon.
There was no ambiguity left. No room for my parents to promise that they were "working on a plan," no space for Lena to spin a story about how everything would be fine once her next venture launched.
I opened a fresh email draft to Marcy.

Marcy,
Thank you. Please retain a licensed residential property management firm to conduct a formal occupancy inspection on Monday. If my parents wish to discuss a short-term lease agreement at fair market value ($4,800/month), they may submit financial proof of income through your office.
Otherwise, prepare the paperwork for a quiet listing with a residential brokerage upon expiration of the 30-day notice.
