Chapter 13 - Unraveling the Web

While Elena and Julian regained their strength in the hospital, Marcus Hale and I spent eighty hours a week inside his legal office, systematically dismantling the empire built on my blood.
The financial audit revealed a nightmare of greed. Over five years, Evelyn and Victoria hadn't just spent the $480,000 I sent directly. They had taken out secondary mortgages, maxed out credit lines opened in my name, and used my identity to secure luxury leases for sports cars and high-end retail boutiques.
"The total debt they racked up in your name comes out to roughly $1.8 million," Marcus explained, tossing a thick financial report onto his mahogany desk.
"How much of it can we recover?" I asked, sipping black coffee.
Marcus smiled—a cold, sharp smile. "Almost all of it. Because the mortgages were obtained through forged powers of attorney, the bank has to void the loans under federal fraud statutes. The luxury cars have already been repossessed. And as for Victoria’s fashion company, Vesper Styles..."
Marcus slid a deed across the desk toward me.
"Because the business was funded 100% with stolen capital traced back to your accounts, the court has placed the entire company into receivership. It belongs to you now."
I picked up the deed, staring at Victoria’s signature at the bottom.
"Liquidate everything," I told Marcus without hesitation. "Sell the clothes, the inventory, the leases, and the store fixtures. Put every single dollar into an irrevocable trust fund for Julian’s education and medical care."
"And the mansion?" Marcus asked.

I closed my eyes, remembering the thumping bass, the glowing chandeliers, and the dark shed tucked fifty yards behind it.
"Put it on the market," I said firmly. "I don't ever want my family to step foot on that dirt again."
