Chapter 18 - The Hayes Foundation

With the $3.2 million recovered from the auction of the Crestview mansion and the liquidation of Victoria’s fashion company, Marcus Hale and I had established a secure financial fortress for my family. But after ensuring Julian’s education and our long-term stability, a significant portion of the capital remained unused.
I refused to spend a single dollar of that dirty money on luxury cars or lavish jewelry. It carried too much pain.
Instead, Elena and I founded The Shelter from Darkness Foundation—a non-profit organization dedicated to providing immediate legal aid, medical rehabilitation, and secure emergency housing for victims of domestic abuse and illegal human confinement.
We partnered with local shelters in California and Illinois, funding private investigators and legal teams to rescue women and children trapped in abusive environments where traditional support systems had failed them.
On the day of the foundation’s opening, Marcus flew out to California to celebrate with us. We stood in the newly renovated headquarters in downtown Monterey, watching staff members organize relief packages and coordinate emergency housing transfers.

"Your father would be proud of you, Daniel," Marcus said, placing a heavy, warm hand on my shoulder as we looked out the window. "You took a pile of poison and turned it into medicine."
"Evelyn thought money was something you used to control people," I replied, watching Elena happily converse with a team of social workers nearby. "I want Julian to grow up knowing that money is only good for one thing: protecting the people you love and lifting up those who can't stand on their own."
