Chapter 9 - The Handcuffs Click

Detective Harris pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Evelyn Hayes, Victoria Hayes, you are both under arrest."
Evelyn gasped, backing away toward the kitchen archway. "Arrest? For what? You can't arrest me! I am his mother! I raised him! Everything he has belongs to me!"
"You are being charged with aggravated child endangerment, unlawful restraint, grand larceny, corporate forgery, and embezzlement," Detective Harris recited calmly, stepping forward and grabbing Evelyn's arm.
"Get your hands off me!" Evelyn screamed, flailing wildly as the metal cuffs clicked over her wrists. She looked at me with eyes filled with pure, unadulterated venom. "Daniel! You ungrateful bastard! I did everything for you! I built your reputation! You’re going to put your own mother in prison over that worthless, penniless girl?"
Victoria began sobbing hysterically as the second deputy pulled her arms behind her back, snapping handcuffs over her manicured wrists. "Daniel, please! I'm your sister! I didn't know! Mom told me you knew everything! She told me you wanted Elena gone!"
"You wore the diamonds bought with the money meant for my son's food, Victoria," I said, staring at her with dead, cold eyes. "You sat in this air-conditioned house while my boy cried because his stomach hurt. You knew."
The deputies turned them around and began escorting them out through the front doors.
As they walked past the shocked guests—who were now filming everything on their smartphones—Evelyn turned her head back toward me, her face contorted in rage.

"You'll rot in hell for this, Daniel!" she shrieked. "You have nothing without me! Nothing!"
"I have my wife," I said softly, stepping closer to her. "I have my son. And as of ten minutes ago... you don't even have a home."
