Chapter 11 - The Grand Jury Subpoena

The wail of federal sirens grew deafening as three unmarked black SUVs swerved into the narrow alleyway, blocking both ends and trapping Viktor against the brick wall. Federal agents spilled out with weapons raised, their commands echoing sharply off the wet cobblestones.

"Federal agents! Hands where we can see them!"

Viktor dropped the tablet into a puddle, raising his hands slowly. Within seconds, he was cuffed, searched, and pressed against the hood of an SUV.

Detective Reed bounded down the alley, his coat drenched, stepping between me and the scene. "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine," I said, my voice surprisingly level. "Dr. Shah... they have someone at her clinic."

Reed immediately grabbed his radio. "Dispatch, this is Reed. I need a unit dispatched to Urgent Care on 4th Street immediately for a welfare check on Dr. Priya Shah. Potential threat on site." He looked back at me, his eyes filled with fierce respect. "We caught Pendelton at his estate five minutes ago trying to board a private chopper. The FBI froze his assets before he could clear the helipad."

By eight o'clock the following morning, the grand jury convened on the third floor of the federal courthouse. The hallway was lined with subpoenas and federal marshals. For years, the men involved in Mercer House had operated in the quiet shadows of executive suites and private clubs, using Daniel as their gatekeeper and fixer. Today, they sat on hard wooden benches, waiting to be questioned under oath.

When my name was called, I walked through the double doors into the grand jury room. Twenty-three citizens sat in tiered rows, watching me with solemn eyes.

Assistant State's Attorney Sarah Lin stepped forward, placing a thick binder on the podium. "State your name for the record, please."

"Clara Mercer," I said firmly, taking my seat at the witness stand.

"Mrs. Mercer," Sarah began, "can you explain the structure of the secondary ledger found on the external drive retrieved from Mercer House?"

I looked directly at the jurors. "It was an insurance policy. My husband used charitable funds to clean up criminal and domestic incidents for influential men in Baltimore. In exchange, those men granted Mercer House municipal contracts, tax exemptions, and political protection. And whenever I asked questions, Daniel used the weight of those same men to remind me that no one would ever take my word over his."

For three hours, I laid out every detail: the dates, the matching bank transfers, the hidden bruises, and the fraudulent loan on my home. When I finally stepped down from the stand, the atmosphere in the room had shifted completely.

The grand jury didn't just return an indictment against Daniel for grand larceny and domestic assault; they issued a multi-count federal indictment charging him, Arthur Pendelton, and seven other high-profile figures with racketeering, wire fraud, and obstruction of justice.
