Chapter 12 - The Collapse of Mercer HouseWith the indictments handed down, the facade of Mercer House crumbled overnight.

I stood in the lobby three days later, holding an administrative authorization granted by the court-appointed receiver. The large oil portrait of Daniel that had hung in the atrium was gone, leaving an unfaded rectangle on the wall where his smiling face used to watch over everyone.

Elena met me by the front desk, carrying a box of files. "The board dissolved this morning," she said softly. "Half of them are hire-purchasing defense attorneys. The city suspended all municipal grants."

"The shelter operations aren't shutting down, Elena," I said, placing a reassuring hand on her arm. "The State Attorney's office approved a emergency transfer of funds. We're restructuring the entire facility under a new independent board—one run by actual advocates, not political donors."

"And what about you, Clara?" she asked. "Are you staying?"

"No," I replied, looking up at the high glass ceiling. "I helped build this place while turned a blind eye to what Daniel was doing. My job now is to make sure every file is audited and every victim whose voice was silenced gets her name restored."

Later that afternoon, Victoria Vance entered the building for the first time in four years—not as a victim hiding in the shadows, but as a key witness assisting the federal receiver.

We sat together in the main conference room, reviewing the list of women who had been coerced into signing non-disclosure agreements under Daniel’s tenure.

"There are sixty-two women on this list," Victoria said, her eyes tracing the printed names. "Sixty-two families he threatened."

"And every single NDA is being voided by the federal judge tomorrow," I told her. "They're free, Victoria. All of us are."

As Victoria wiped away a tear, my phone chimed on the mahogany table. It was a message from Detective Reed:

Daniel’s original defense team has completely withdrawn. He just appointed a new public defender. Trial date is set for next month.
