Chapter 4 - Echoes in the LedgerDaniel’s corner office was pristine. Mahogany furniture, pristine glass bookshelves, and framed photographs of him shaking hands with governors, mayor candidates, and police chiefs lined the walls.

Rachel closed the door behind us, turning the lock. "Where do we start?"

"The air-gapped drive Elena mentioned," I said, walking behind his desk.

For years, I had watched Daniel manipulate locks, passwords, and security systems. He believed he was the smartest man in any room, which was his greatest weakness—he assumed I was too diminished to notice patterns. His master password had always been a combination of his mother’s maiden name and the date he founded Mercer House.

I pulled out the sleek black external drive from behind his desk monitor, connected it to my laptop, and typed in the string: Vance1014.

The drive clicked, initializing. Folders populated the screen in rapid succession.

"Look at this," Rachel gasped, leaning over my shoulder.

These were not charity ledgers. They were offshore transfers. Over the last four years, millions of dollars raised for the shelter system had been routed through shell corporations registered in Delaware and the Cayman Islands. But it wasn't just embezzlement.

There was a sub-folder titled simply: Safekeeping.

I opened it. Inside were hundreds of scanned documents—police reports, medical affidavits, and non-disclosure agreements involving prominent figures across Baltimore. Real estate developers, judges, council members.

"He wasn't just running a charity," I said, the magnitude of the truth dawning on me. "He was collecting leverage. Whenever a powerful man in this city got into trouble at home, Daniel used Mercer House to cover it up, clean the mess, and hold the evidence over their heads forever."

Suddenly, the handle of the office door rattled violently.

"Clara!" a harsh voice barked from the hallway. It was Arthur Pendelton, the chairman of the Mercer House Board of Directors and one of Daniel’s closest political allies. "Open this door immediately! You have no legal authority to be on these premises!"
