Chapter 13 - The CornerstoneBy mid-summer, construction on the Sterling Sanctuary Foundation was officially underway.

Located forty miles north of the city on eighty acres of rolling green hills, pine woods, and a natural lake, the property had once belonged to my maternal grandparents. The old, weathered farmhouse at the center of the estate was being painstakingly restored into an administrative center, while three brand-new timber-frame residential cottages were being erected along the treeline.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, the property was filled with the sound of pounding hammers, hum of saws, and laughter.

Volunteers from the local community—alongside several off-duty officers from the police department and staff from Daniel Brooks’s legal firm—had gathered for the official cornerstone ceremony.

Emily was running across the grass with a group of children whose mothers were staying at a temporary emergency shelter downtown, her face painted like a multicolored butterfly.

I stood near the foundation frame of the main cottage, wearing work boots, jeans, and a hard hat, looking over a set of architectural blueprints with Sarah Chen.

"The solar panels go up next week," Sarah said, tapping the structural diagram. "And the playground equipment you ordered arrived this morning. Three slides, exactly as Emily dictated."

"Perfect," I laughed, rolling up the plans. "If we miss the slide deadline, I’ll have a union strike on my hands."

A black sedan pulled up the gravel driveway, parking near the old barn. Marcus Vance stepped out, wearing sunglasses and a casual polo shirt. He walked over to where Dad was standing near a stone mason's workstation, inspecting a large piece of carved granite.

I walked over to join them, wiping sweat from my forehead. "Hey, Marcus. Glad you could make it."

"Wouldn't miss it for the world," Marcus said, looking around at the bustling construction site with genuine admiration. "It’s incredible what you’ve built here in three months, Claire. My team at the security firm wanted to donate the entire perimeter surveillance and emergency alert system for the facilities—top-of-the-line encrypted mesh network, free of charge."

"Marcus, you don't have to do that," I said, touched by his generosity.

"Consider it a personal investment in peace of mind," Marcus smiled warmly, turning his gaze toward my father. "Besides, Arthur set a standard for this town thirty years ago. Some of us are just trying to follow his example."

Dad smoothed his hand over the top of the smooth granite stone sitting on the wooden workbench. Engraved cleanly into the gray surface were the words:

THE STERLING SANCTUARY “Where peace is preserved, and hope is restored.”

"It's beautiful, Dad," I whispered, resting my hand against his back.

"Your mother would have loved it," Dad said, his eyes shining with quiet, unfiltered emotion. "She always said that a home isn't built out of wood or stone, Claire. It’s built out of safety. If a child wakes up here and feels safe, then every trial, every court battle, and every shadow we fought through was worth it."
