Chapter 9 - The Trap TightensBy nightfall on Thursday, the Bennett empire was completely fractured.

Richard Bennett had been intercepted by Federal Marshals at Midway Airport at six PM while attempting to board a private charter flight to the Bahamas. The aluminum briefcase in his possession contained two million dollars in unregistered bearer bonds and three fraudulent passports. He was currently being held without bail in federal custody on charges of flight to avoid prosecution and money laundering.

Meanwhile, Matthew Bennett remained trapped inside Eleanor’s vast, silent estate under house arrest, monitored by his court-ordered ankle bracelet.

At eight o'clock, my father's home phone rang once again.

This time, it was an unexpected caller: Jonathan Pierce, calling from a private line.

"Arthur," Pierce's voice was barely a whisper, exhausted and defeated. "I am calling off the record as an officer of the court."

Dad set the call on speaker so Daniel and I could listen. "Go ahead, Jonathan."

"Matthew wants to make a deal," Pierce confessed quietly. "He knows Richard is done. He knows the federal grand jury is indicting the entire holding company tomorrow morning. He is willing to offer a full, signed confession regarding the financial fraud and his father's instruction to forge Claire's signature."

I held my breath, looking at my father.

"And what about the assault on my daughter?" Dad asked, his voice dead cold.

A heavy pause lingered on the line.

"Matthew claims... he claims Eleanor was the one who insisted on framing the fall as an accident," Pierce admitted hesitantly. "He says Eleanor told him that if Claire died or was rendered permanently incapacitated, the mother's trust would pass directly to Emily, with Matthew acting as sole legal guardian of the child's estate."

A cold, sickening chill swept through my entire body.

It hadn't just been a reckless push in a moment of anger. It had been a calculated, monstrous attempt to take my life so they could gain access to my daughter's inheritance.

Dad’s knuckles turned white as he gripped the edge of his desk. "Tell me exactly what Matthew is offering, Jonathan."

"He will plead guilty to corporate fraud, conspiracy, and felony domestic battery," Pierce said. "He will take a fifteen-year state prison sentence with no possibility of parole for eight years. In exchange, he wants the federal prosecutor to drop the attempted murder enhancement charges, and he wants full immunity for himself regarding his father's offshore entities."

Daniel Brooks shook his head silently at my father, mouthing: No deal.

Dad looked at me. He saw the tears shining in my eyes, but he also saw the unyielding, fire-forged strength that had grown inside me over the last forty-eight hours.

"Jonathan," Dad spoke clearly into the phone.

"Yes, Arthur?"

"Tell your client that Chief Prosecutor Sterling doesn't negotiate with men who throw his daughter down stairs."

"Arthur, please—"

"The plea offer is rejected," Dad cut him off with absolute finality. "Matthew Bennett will go to trial. He will face every single charge, including attempted murder, criminal forgery, and child endangerment. And I will personally sit in the front row of the courtroom every single day until the verdict is read."

Dad hung up the phone.

He turned to me, reaching out to wrap his large, protective arms around my shoulders, drawing me into a warm, safe embrace.

"It’s over, Claire," Dad whispered into my hair. "They have nowhere left to run."
