Chapter 17 - The Unseen HandBy the time we pulled into the driveway of my childhood home, the quiet suburban street had resumed its tactical posture. Two unmarked black sedans were parked at the corners, and Marcus Vance stood on the front porch, adjusting a radio earbud.

Inside the den, Dad sat at his mahogany desk. But he wasn't looking at farm catalogs or garden blueprints. Spread across the table were three thick, gray accordion files marked with yellow federal seal tape.

"Dad," I said, stepping into the room and taking off my coat. "Daniel told me about Eleanor."

"It’s worse than a simple escape, Claire," Dad said, his voice steady and calm, though his hazel eyes burned with absolute, focused intensity. "Eleanor didn't flee the country. She didn't head for a airport or a private dock. She went straight to a private vault in South Chicago."

I sat down in the armchair across from him. "What vault?"

"Twenty-five years ago, before I forced Thomas Vance to retire," Dad explained, pointing to an old black-and-white surveillance photo on the desk, "Eleanor created an off-grid safety deposit box under a corporate alias—Vanguard Asset Management. It was an offshore holding account that even the federal receivership auditors missed during the bankruptcy liquidation."

"What was inside it?"

"Cash," Daniel answered, stepping up beside the desk. "Three million dollars in untraceable Swiss bearer notes and a set of master access codes to Bennett Development’s legacy server backups."

Dad looked directly at me. "Eleanor knows she can't rebuild her family's empire, Claire. She knows Matthew and Richard are spending the rest of their lives behind iron bars. She doesn't want money anymore. She wants total, absolute destruction."

Before I could process the words, Marcus stepped into the den, holding his satellite phone.

"Arthur," Marcus said, his voice taut. "We just intercepted an encrypted distress signal from the server room at the Sterling Sanctuary."

My heart hammered violently against my ribs. "The Sanctuary? Emily is at school, but there are forty women and children staying at the residential cottages right now!"

"Eleanor’s team didn't attack the cottages," Marcus reported quickly, looking down at his tablet screen. "They uploaded a high-level ransomware virus directly into the Sanctuary’s primary utility and security control systems. They’ve locked down the electronic gates, cut the backup generators, and disabled the emergency fire suppression system."

A dark, terrifying realization washed over me. "She’s trying to trap them inside."

"No," Dad said, standing up slowly, his tall frame casting a long shadow across the room as he pulled a dark coat from the rack. "She’s trying to draw me out."
