Chapter 14 - The Empty LeashThe transition from active duty to full retirement wasn't without its quiet, poignant moments.

As winter set in, bringing a blanket of heavy white snow across the Mercer farm, Titan's daily energy naturally began to slow down. He still ran the river path, but his sprints were shorter. He still checked his perimeter, but he spent more time curled up by the stone fireplace in the Mercer living room, his old joints absorbing the steady radiating heat.
One evening in late January, Maya sat on the living room floor beside him while Paul was out in the barn checking on the winter feed.
The house was completely silent, save for the crack of burning logs in the hearth.
Maya reached for the old leather training lead that still sat folded neatly in her canvas gear bag. She unclipped the brass snap, holding the loop in her hand. For four years, that leather strap had been the tether connecting their minds—the instrument through which she directed his life, his focus, and his safety.
Now, it was just a piece of old leather.
She laid it across her knees, her thumb tracing the worn grain where her fingers had gripped it during countless pursuits, searches, and cold morning patrols.
Titan lifted his heavy head from the rug. His amber eyes looked at the strap in her lap, then slowly shifted up to her face. He didn't whine or tense. He simply shifted his weight, crawled closer until his chin rested directly on top of the leather lead, and closed his eyes.
He didn't need the leash anymore. He didn't need a command to stay.

The tether was gone, but the bond was stronger than it had ever been.
Maya smiled, wrapping her arms gently around his neck and burying her face in his thick winter coat. "You're off duty forever, buddy," she whispered. "Forever."
