Chapter 15 - The Two ShadowsSpring returned to the river valley with an explosion of green grass, blooming wildflowers, and the rushing sound of melting snowpack rushing down from the northern hills.

On a bright Saturday morning in May, Paul Mercer sat in his usual rocking chair on the front porch, watching a scene that had become their daily ritual.

Down in the lower pasture, two figures were moving across the green grass.

Maya wasn't holding a leash. She wasn't carrying a training toy. She was walking at a relaxed, unhurried pace, her hands in the pockets of her jacket.

Beside her, matching her stride step for step, walked Titan.

He wasn't wearing a tactical harness, a police collar, or any marker of his working past. He walked with his head held high, his mahogany coat catching the brilliant morning sunlight, completely free, completely at peace.

Every fifty yards, Titan would stop, turn his head to look at Maya, wait for her reassuring nod, and then trot happily ahead.

Paul watched them from the porch, a quiet, melancholic smile touching his lips as he thought of his son, Daniel, who had first walked those exact fields with the same dog nearly a decade ago.

The circle was closed. The ghost had been laid to rest. And the dog who had spent years caught between two worlds had finally found a place where he belonged entirely.

Maya stopped near the old wooden fence at the edge of the property, turning to look back up toward the farmhouse. She raised her hand, waving cheerfully to Paul.

Paul raised his coffee mug in silent salute.

Titan let out a soft, joyful bark—not a warning, not an alert, but a simple, clear expression of life—and bounded through the wild clover, chasing the wind all the way back to the porch.
