Chapter 14

Chapter 14: The Envelope on the Counter

Two months into our marriage, the rhythm of our lives had settled into a beautiful, predictable cadence.

It was a Tuesday evening. I was at the dining table, going over some quarterly financial reports for my firm, while Evelyn was helping Chloe with a sprawling science fair project involving far too much glitter.

Once Chloe had successfully glued the final piece and bounded upstairs to wash her hands, Evelyn walked over to the table. She didn't sit down. She stood across from me, holding a thick, pristine white envelope. She looked nervous—a rare expression for the woman who had fearlessly stared down my demons.

"What is that?" I asked, setting my pen down immediately, giving her my full attention.

Evelyn took a deep breath and slid the envelope across the polished wood.

"I didn't want to overstep," she began, her voice remarkably quiet. "I know I am already her mother in every way that counts. I know the ring she gave me was a promise. But... I wanted it to be undeniable. In the eyes of the law, the world, and history."

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a stack of legal documents. Petition for Stepparent Adoption. The paperwork was completely filled out on her end. She was legally petitioning to become Chloe’s mother.

My vision blurred. I looked up at Evelyn, who was biting her lower lip, waiting for my reaction.

"Evelyn," I choked out, the overwhelming weight of her love hitting me like a tidal wave.

"I want her to have my name, Marcus. I want to have hers. I want anyone who ever looks at a piece of paper concerning this family to know that she is mine, just as much as she is yours," Evelyn said, tears brimming in her eyes. "If you're okay with it. If Chloe is okay with it."

I didn't answer with words. I stood up, walked around the table, and pulled her into a crushing embrace. I buried my face in her shoulder, letting the tears fall.

She wasn't just staying in the rain with us; she was building the roof over our heads.
