Chapter 21: The Masterpiece Expands
The delivery room was bathed in the soft morning light filtering through the blinds.
After eight hours of intense, agonizing labor, Evelyn squeezed my hand with a grip that could crush stone. She gave one final, fierce push.
The room was suddenly filled with a sharp, beautiful, high-pitched cry.
"It's a boy," the doctor announced with a warm smile, placing the small, wriggling, crying life onto Evelyn’s chest.
I collapsed onto the edge of the bed, tears streaming down my face, pressing my forehead against Evelyn’s temple. She was exhausted, her hair plastered to her forehead with sweat, but she looked like a goddess.
"He's beautiful," I wept, looking at the tiny, perfect fingers of my newborn son. "You did so good, Evelyn. I love you so much."
"I love you too," she whispered, kissing my cheek before looking down at the baby. "Hi, little one. We've been waiting for you."
A few hours later, after Evelyn had rested and we were moved to the recovery suite, the door crept open.
Chloe walked in, holding the hand of Evelyn’s best friend who had met us at the hospital.
Chloe tiptoed over to the bed. Her eyes were wide with absolute wonder as she looked at the tiny bundle wrapped in a striped hospital blanket.

Evelyn smiled softly. "Of course you can, big sister."
