Chapter 16

Chapter 16: The Gavel's Echo
The family courtroom was nothing like the sterile, terrifying legal arenas I had fought in years prior. This room was warm, bathed in the morning sunlight, and filled with a sense of profound celebration.
We stood before Judge Harper, a kind-faced woman with silver hair.
Chloe stood directly between Evelyn and me, holding both of our hands. She was wearing a new yellow dress she had picked out specifically for today, buzzing with an electric, undeniable energy.
"I have reviewed the petition," Judge Harper said, looking down at the paperwork, then looking at Chloe. "Chloe, do you understand what we are doing today?"
Chloe nodded vigorously. "Evelyn is officially becoming my mom on paper. Even though she’s already my mom in real life."
The judge smiled warmly. "That is exactly right. And is this what you want?"
"More than anything," Chloe said, looking up at Evelyn with absolute, unfiltered adoration.
Judge Harper signed the bottom of the document with a heavy, definitive stroke of her pen.
"It is the greatest privilege of my job to recognize love when I see it," the judge announced, her voice echoing in the quiet room. "By the authority vested in me by the state, I hereby grant this petition for adoption. Chloe, you are officially and legally the daughter of Marcus and Evelyn."
The gavel struck the sounding block with a sharp, resonant crack.

It was the sound of a generational curse breaking. It was the sound of a new foundation being cemented into the earth.
Evelyn dropped to her knees, pulling Chloe into her arms, both of them crying tears of sheer joy. I wrapped my arms around them both, burying my face in Evelyn’s hair. The piece of paper didn't change how we felt, but it permanently locked the world out. We were impenetrable.
