Gabriel had been lied to too.
Conrad told him that if Julian reached forty without a surviving child, Gabriel would receive the descendant voting block.
The actual amendment transferred the shares to Conrad’s foundation.
Gabriel would remain chief executive but never control the block personally.
Conrad had used inheritance as leverage against both sons.
Julian withdrew from the company.
Gabriel obeyed to earn a future Conrad never intended to deliver.
The deception did not excuse fraud.
It explained why Gabriel helped maintain it.
“Did Conrad tell you to harm Mara?” investigators asked.
“No.”
“Did he know the glass was being prepared for an overnight failure?”
“Yes.”
“Did he return to the resort that night?”
“Yes.”
“Did you see him on the catwalk?”
“No.”
“Did he possess a retaining pin?”
“Adrian gave him one during the donor dinner.”
“Why?”
“He wanted to inspect what we were paying for.”
“Did he understand the system?”
“My father understands everything when ignorance is expensive.”
Gabriel provided a voice message.
Conrad spoke at 11:16 the night before the collapse.
Move the release forward. The family schedule changed.
Gabriel replied:
The atrium will be occupied.
Conrad:
Not the weak corner.
Gabriel:
Mara’s meeting is beneath it.
A long pause followed.
Conrad said:
Then she should not have involved herself.
The message ended.
Conrad’s attorneys challenged authenticity and context.
Forensic analysis supported that the recording was not obviously altered.
The statement still did not explicitly order murder.
It showed knowledge of the danger and indifference to Mara’s presence.
Prosecutors arrested Conrad on charges involving conspiracy, attempted evidence destruction, financial fraud, and reckless conduct. Whether attempted murder could be proved remained under review.
He surrendered through counsel.
He wore no signet ring.
Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted:
Did you try to kill your daughter-in-law?
Was your granddaughter targeted?
Did you order the cable removed?
Conrad said nothing.
At the detention hearing, his attorneys argued he posed no flight risk.
Prosecutors presented foreign accounts, private aircraft access, and a second passport lawfully held through dual citizenship.
The court imposed restrictive conditions, electronic monitoring, asset controls, and no contact with witnesses.
He was released pending trial.
Mara hated seeing him walk out.
Her attorney reminded her that pretrial release did not determine guilt.
She knew.
Knowledge did not prevent fear.
Iris reached sixty days.
The family trust’s voting shares remained under independent administration.
Conrad petitioned to invalidate the descendant provision.
He claimed Eleanor lacked capacity when signing it.
Julian exploded when he read the filing.
“He spent thirty years praising my mother’s intelligence.”
“Now her signature threatens him,” Mara said.
The court ordered examination of medical records, witnesses, and drafting history.
Eleanor’s physician documented no cognitive impairment.
Her lawyer recorded the signing.
In the video, Eleanor looked directly at the camera.
“My husband loves control more than succession,” she said. “He will tell our sons the company belongs to them while arranging that it never leaves him.”
Julian watched the recording twice.
His mother died from ovarian cancer when he was nineteen.
Conrad told him she had been too ill to manage financial details during the final months.
The video showed otherwise.
Eleanor continued:
“If Julian has a child, I want that child’s parents to choose an independent steward. No grandfather should own a descendant’s voice before the descendant can speak.”
Mara thought of Wren.
A child without a spoken voice had saved all of them.
The trust court upheld the amendment provisionally, subject to the ninety-day condition.
Conrad’s control would not return automatically.
The criminal case remained unresolved.
The seventy-second day brought another threat.
Someone entered the rented house while Mara and Julian were at Iris’s medical appointment.
Nothing valuable disappeared.
The intruder placed a broken piece of laminated glass inside the crib.
Security footage showed a person wearing a delivery uniform and face covering.
The vehicle plate was stolen.
A note lay beneath the glass.
NINETY DAYS IS A LONG TIME FOR A FRAGILE CHILD.
Mara stared at the photograph taken by police.
“I want armed security.”
Julian nodded.
No argument.
No pride.
They moved into a protected residence.
