His attorneys said they did not know where he was.
Miriam Voss, the family general counsel, resigned and turned over records.
She denied helping him escape.
The driver who transported Conrad for twenty years was found unconscious inside a garage.
He had been drugged.
When he recovered, he said Conrad entered a black vehicle driven by a woman.
He did not see her face.
The vehicle belonged to Meridian Continuity Services.
Its GPS unit had been removed.
The company’s acting director was Evelyn Moss, Conrad’s assistant.
Evelyn could not be located.
Her apartment was empty.
A note remained on the kitchen counter:
I scheduled the pool because he told me Mara would expose all of us.
The handwriting appeared to be Evelyn’s but required verification.
Was she confessing?
Being framed?
Fleeing?
The investigation did not assume.
Celeste’s trial began while Conrad remained missing.
Prosecutors presented vendor payments, foundation transfers, and messages proving she knew repair funds were diverted.
Her defense argued Gabriel concealed the dangerous work and Conrad controlled the family finances.
The jury convicted her of several financial offenses and acquitted her on charges requiring proof that she knew physical danger would result.
The verdict disappointed those who wanted one family-wide conviction for everything.
Legal responsibility remained specific.
Gabriel testified later against Conrad’s interests in a separate proceeding.
He admitted helping prepare the controlled overnight panel failure.
He said Conrad changed the release timing.
“Why would he want Mara beneath the panel?” the prosecutor asked.
“To stop the descendant trust.”
“How do you know?”
“He told me the baby could not reach ninety days.”
“Exact words?”
Gabriel closed his eyes.
“He said, ‘No living child, no transfer.’”
“Did you withdraw from the plan?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I thought he meant legal action.”
“You received a message placing Mara beneath the weak corner.”
“Yes.”
“And did nothing.”
“Yes.”
Gabriel’s cooperation did not make him courageous retroactively.
He helped expose the truth after being caught inside it.
The court later imposed a significant sentence reflecting his offenses, role, cooperation, and the consequences of the scheme.
Adrian and Victor received their own sentences after pleas.
Peter Vaughn lost his engineering license permanently and faced criminal penalties for false certifications.
Civil restitution remained uncertain.
Conrad had not faced a jury.
Halcyon Ridge was sold to a public-benefit redevelopment trust.
The pool atrium would be demolished.
Naomi proposed replacing it with a ground-level rehabilitation and community aquatic center offering free swimming lessons.
Mara resisted at first.
She could not imagine entering another pool.
Then Wren signed:

Mara shook her head.
Absolutely not.
Wren crossed her arms.
Baby needs mother who swims.
Julian watched the exchange.
“She has a point.”
“You are both unbearable.”
Mara eventually began private lessons in a shallow therapeutic pool.
The first day, she stood in water reaching only her waist and trembled.
Wren sat at the edge.
Mara took one step.

Mara disliked the language.
