CHAPTER 2: THE EVIDENCE ON THE TABLET

"Mom..."
Alexander Reed’s voice cracked from the far end of the hallway, sharp and terrified.
He had just emerged from his private study, still holding a stack of financial reports, when the horrifying sound of the fall had echoed through the mansion. The moment his eyes registered the limp form lying at the foot of the stairs, the papers slipped from his fingers, scattering across the floor.
He dropped to his knees beside her, his expensive Italian suit completely forgotten, his hands trembling violently as he hovered over her broken body, afraid that touching her incorrectly might cause further damage. He gently cradled the side of her face, his thumb catching a bead of blood near her cheekbone.
"Call an ambulance!" Alexander shouted, his voice echoing frantically up toward the vaulted ceilings. "Call an ambulance right now!"
The house staff burst into the foyer from various doors, wide-eyed with horror, several immediately dialing emergency services on their phones.
High above the scene, Victoria stood frozen at the top of the staircase. Her champagne silk dress shimmered softly under the lights, but every ounce of color had completely drained from her face. Her chest heaved as she fought to regain her composure, her mind racing to construct a narrative.
"I—she slipped," Victoria said quickly, her voice echoing down to the foyer, trembling with rehearsed horror. "She lost her balance, Alexander! I tried to catch her, I swear—she stepped backward and just fell!"
Alexander didn’t answer. He didn't even look up at her.
His entire world had narrowed down to the frail woman lying beneath him. His breathing was ragged, his hands shaking so violently he could barely hold her still. "Mom, stay with me. Please, keep your eyes open. Don't close them."
Evelyn struggled to draw breath, her lungs feeling as though they were trapped under iron weights. Her vision blurred, swirling with dark spots, but she forced herself to stay conscious. She looked into the frantic, tear-filled eyes of the son she had raised alone in a tiny one-room apartment.
"Alex..." she whispered, her voice barely a dry rasp against the silence of the room. "I... I didn't fall."
Alexander stiffened instantly. Every muscle in his body turned to ice.
Before anyone could speak, Marcus, the estate's head security officer, cleared his throat as he stepped forward through the crowd of stunned servants. In his hands, he held a heavy tactical tablet, its screen illuminated with an active diagnostic interface.
"Sir..." Marcus said, his voice unusually low and grave. "The primary security system auto-synced footage directly to the encrypted cloud server three minutes ago. This feed comes from the high-definition staircase camera."
Marcus pressed play and held out the screen.

The high-resolution recording was indisputable. It showed the entire encounter from an elevated angle: Victoria standing above Evelyn. Victoria’s subtle, calculated glance around the seemingly empty lobby to verify she was unobserved. The sudden extension of her hands. The deliberate, forceful push that launched an defenseless sixty-eight-year-old woman down a flight of stone stairs.
A collective gasp rippled through the gathered security guards and house staff.
