CHAPTER 5: HOME

Three months later.

The autumn sun shone warmly over a quiet, sunlit bungalow situated on a peaceful suburban street miles away from the coastal estates of the ultra-wealthy. The front porch was lined with pots of blooming yellow chrysanthemums, and the gentle scent of fresh tea drifted through the open windows.

In the backyard garden, Evelyn sat comfortably in a cushioned rocking chair, a warm knitted blanket resting across her lap. Her facial scars had healed into faint, silver lines, and though she walked with a slight limp, her eyes were bright, clear, and full of life.

The back door clicked open, and Alexander stepped out onto the wooden deck. He no longer wore the stiff three-piece suits of his corporate days; instead, he wore a simple sweater and dark jeans. Following the incident, Alexander had restructured his life—stepping down as CEO to take an advisory role that allowed him to work from home, while liquidating the grand seaside mansion entirely.

He walked over carrying two steaming mugs of tea, handing one carefully to his mother before sitting down on the bench beside her rocking chair.

"The lawyers called this morning," Alexander said softly, taking a slow sip. "Victoria accepted the plea deal. Three years without parole for aggravated assault, plus full restitution. It's over, Mom. Completely over."

Evelyn looked out at the small garden, watching a cardinal land on the bird feeder near the fence. She took a slow sip of her tea and let out a long, peaceful sigh.

"I don't care about the prison time, Alex," she said quietly, turning to look at her son. "I only care that I have my son back. The real one. The one who used to help me carry the laundry baskets up three flights of stairs."

Alexander smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached his eyes for the first time in years. He reached out and rested his hand over hers.

"You don't ever have to earn a place in my life, Mom," Alexander said softly. "This house... this little home right here. Is it yours?"

May you like

Evelyn looked around at the modest wooden deck, the green lawn, and the simple house that felt full of warmth, quiet, and safety. She smiled gently, squeezing his hand tight.

"Yes, Alex," she whispered, her voice filled with a peace she hadn't known in decades. "This one is home."
