Chapter 4: The Confession in the Library

An hour later, the mansion was eerily quiet. The police had come and gone, taking Jessica’s designer luggage and her freedom with them. The investigation was airtight; digital forensics had even uncovered text messages where Jessica plotted the entire scheme with a disgraced former accountant.

In the mahogany-paneled estate library, illuminated only by the warm glow of a reading lamp and the roaring fireplace, Camilla stood by the tall arched windows, looking out at the sprawling, rain-slicked gardens. She wore a soft, borrowed cashmere sweater, her injuries treated and bandaged.

The heavy door creaked open. Christian walked in, carrying two crystal glasses of amber bourbon. He stopped a few feet away, hesitant—a man accustomed to absolute control who suddenly realized he had no idea how to approach the person he had wronged.

"You should be resting," Christian said quietly, extending a glass toward her.

Camilla turned, her dark eyes catching the firelight. She didn't take the glass. "I'm not fragile, Mr. Sterling. Working-class women don't have the luxury of resting after we've been beaten and accused of crimes we didn't commit."

Christian flinched. He set both glasses down on the antique mahogany desk, running a hand through his dark hair. "I deserved that. Every word of it."

"You did," Camilla replied bluntly, crossing her arms. "The moment you walked in, you believed her because of what I wear and who my parents are. To people like you, background is a crystal ball. You assumed I was violent because I didn't come from a gated community."

"That’s not true," Christian protested defensively, stepping closer.

"Isn't it?" Camilla challenged, her voice rising with a controlled, fierce passion that captivated him entirely. "For two years, I watched you live in that gilded cage, completely blind to the monster sleeping in your bed because she looked the part. You thought you chose a queen, Christian. You chose a viper."

The use of his first name hung in the heavy air between them. Christian looked at her—really looked at her—not as an employee, not as a caregiver, but as a brilliant, unyielding, breathtaking force of nature. He realized, with a sudden, overwhelming jolt in his chest, that throughout his entire marriage, he had never felt this level of raw, intellectual, and emotional connection with anyone.

"Why did you stay?" Christian asked softly, his voice losing its corporate edge, replaced by a raw, genuine vulnerability. "After everything Jessica put you through... the humiliation, the pay cuts, the abuse. Why didn't you just quit?"

Camilla looked away, her gaze returning to the dark garden outside. "Because of your mother. When she looks at me, she doesn't see a nurse. She sees a human being. And nobody deserves to be left unprotected in a house full of wolves."

Christian stepped directly into her personal space. The scent of rain and cedar surrounded him. He reached out, his fingers gently brushing against the edge of the bandage on her cheek, his touch feather-light, completely reverent.

"And who protects you?" Christian whispered, his eyes locked onto hers.

Camilla’s breath hitched. For a second, the world outside the library walls vanished entirely.
