Chapter 5: Dawn Over the Estate

One year later, the Sterling Estate looked entirely different. The cold, intimidating minimalist decor had been replaced with warm lighting, fresh flowers, and an aura of genuine life and laughter.
In the sunlit kitchen where the nightmare had begun a year ago, the marble countertops were now filled with the sweet scent of baking pastries and coffee.
Camilla stood by the window, wearing a simple, elegant linen dress, laughing as she helped Christian’s mother—now healthier, stronger, and smiling brightly—measure ingredients for a Sunday pie.

Footsteps approached from behind, and a pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around Camilla’s waist. A warm chin rested softly on her shoulder.
"You're spoiling her," Christian murmured, pressing a soft kiss to the crook of her neck. He was dressed casually in a charcoal sweater, looking more relaxed and genuinely happy than he had in a decade.
"I'm teaching her my grandmother's secret recipe, which is legally classified information," Camilla teased, turning in his arms to wrap her own around his neck.
"Is that right?" Christian smiled, his blue eyes sparkling with absolute devotion. "Because the board of directors is currently waiting for me downstairs, but I find myself completely paralyzed by your illegal baking tutorials."
"Then go to your meeting, CEO," Camilla laughed softly. "Some of us have a foundation to run."
Following Jessica’s conviction and sentencing for attempted elder abuse, fraud, and conspiracy, Christian had restructured the entire Sterling philanthropic arm, appointing Camilla as its executive director. Under her leadership, the foundation had funded dozens of legal aid centers and safe havens for working-class women facing corporate and domestic exploitation. She had transformed her pain into an empire of justice.
Christian didn't let go immediately. He looked down at her, his expression turning solemn and deeply tender. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
Camilla’s breath caught. "Christian... we talked about this. We're taking it slow."
"A year is slow in Sterling years," Christian joked softly, though his voice trembled with sincerity. He clicked the box open, revealing a breathtaking, bespoke diamond ring that caught the morning sunlight like liquid fire. "Camilla... you saved my mother's life. You saved my soul from a house of lies. You didn't just walk into my world; you brought the light back into it. Marry me. Let me spend the rest of my life proving that I am worthy of the fire you carry."
From across the kitchen, the elderly mother beamed, clapping her hands together with childlike delight.
Tears welled up in Camilla’s eyes, but this time, they weren't tears of pain or terror. They were tears of absolute, hard-won triumph.

"Yes," Camilla whispered, smiling brightly as Christian slipped the ring onto her finger. " Yes, I will."
As Christian pulled her into a deep, passionate embrace, the morning sun broke fully over the sprawling ocean horizon, bathing the estate in an endless, golden dawn. The nightmare was over. The true life had finally begun.
