Three days later Richard received an unexpected phone call.
The voice sounded old...
frightened...
and familiar.
"My name is Margaret."
"I was Emily's nanny when she was little."
"I've been waiting six years for someone to ask the right questions."
Richard drove three hours to a quiet coastal town.
Margaret lived alone in a tiny white cottage overlooking the ocean.
She opened the door carrying a weathered photo album.
Before Richard could speak, she said quietly,
"Emily knew someone wanted to destroy your family."
She placed several photographs onto the table.
Each one showed Vanessa secretly meeting with a man Richard recognized immediately.
Victor Langley.
Richard's former business partner.
The same partner who disappeared overseas shortly after Emily died.
Margaret explained everything.
Victor had been stealing millions from the company.
Emily discovered the fraud.
Vanessa wasn't acting alone.
She had been feeding Victor confidential information for years.
Emily planned to expose them both.
Instead...
she died.
Victor vanished.
Vanessa stayed.
Slowly earning Richard's trust...
until she became Sophie's caretaker.
It had never been about love.

Margaret reached into another envelope.
Inside was a flash drive.
Emily had mailed it to her only two days before the accident.
"I promised I'd keep this safe."
"I was too afraid to come forward."
Richard plugged it into his laptop.
Security footage appeared.
Emily speaking directly into the camera.
"If you're seeing this... something happened to me."
"And if Vanessa is still near Sophie..."
"Please don't leave my daughter alone with her."
Richard broke down.
