One year later...
the mansion was gone.
Richard sold it.
He said no house built on painful memories deserved another day of their lives.
Instead, he bought a modest home beside a quiet lake.
No security gates.
No marble floors.
Just laughter.
Fresh cookies.
A swing hanging beneath an old oak tree.
Every Sunday Sophie and Richard cooked breakfast together.
Sometimes the pancakes burned.
Sometimes the kitchen became a disaster.
Neither of them cared.
Because every meal meant something now.
No one ever had to ask permission to eat again.
Richard created the Emily Foundation.
Its mission was simple:
Protect children suffering from abuse and neglect.
Thousands of families received legal help, counseling, emergency housing, and hope.
Emily's name became a symbol of courage instead of tragedy.
On Sophie's eighth birthday, Richard handed her the journal Emily had written years before.
Inside the final page he had added one sentence.
"Your mother saved you before she died. I promise I'll spend the rest of my life making sure her love never ends."
Sophie smiled through happy tears.
She looked toward the bright afternoon sky and whispered,
"I miss you, Mommy."
A warm breeze rustled the leaves overhead.
Richard gently squeezed her hand.
