Chapter 2: The Valor of the Uniform

The ballroom fell into a terrifying, unnatural silence. The music stopped. Hundreds of eyes turned toward the young woman in the simple white uniform and the socialite in the red gown.

Vanessa’s confidence was a towering, fragile monument of ego. She believed the room was hers to command, and the people within it were merely props for her grand performance. She saw Clara not as a human being, but as a stain on the immaculate finish of the evening.

"You're fired," Vanessa barked, waving a hand toward the ballroom exit. "And I’ll make sure you never work in this city again. I’ll make sure your name is a synonym for 'unemployable.' You think you’re a hero? You’re a waitress."

Clara stood her ground, her gaze fixed steadily on Vanessa’s arrogant, dilated pupils. She felt the weight of her entire livelihood resting on the line. She knew she was poor, she knew she needed this job to pay her rent, but she also knew that if she walked away, the world would remain a place where the strong were permitted to break the weak.

"I’d rather be a waitress than a bully," Clara whispered, her defiance ringing out like a bell.

Vanessa was ready to strike. She drew back her hand, the rings on her fingers glinting like weaponry under the chandelier’s light. She was blinded by her status, entirely unaware that the man watching from the edge of the velvet curtains had already stopped smiling.
