Chapter 3: The Shadow in the Wings

The man was Julian Sterling, the owner of the estate and the wealthiest man in the room. He had been standing in the shadows for a reason—he disliked the performative cruelty of his own social circle. He had been watching Mrs. Gable, his grandmother, with a quiet, protective love from across the room.
When he saw Clara step in, when he saw the courage required for a girl to risk her life for a woman she didn't even know, he didn't just feel anger. He felt a profound sense of clarity.
He stepped out from the darkness. His presence was like a sudden, chilling wind. He walked toward the center of the marble floor, his tuxedo immaculate, his expression a terrifying, calm void.
"Vanessa," Julian said. His voice was not loud, but it caused the socialite to stop mid-motion. She turned, a smug smile forming on her face, expecting him to back her up, to laugh at the 'troublesome staff.'

"Julian, darling," she said, her voice shifting into a sickly-sweet tone. "Thank goodness you’re here. This girl has caused quite the scene, and I'm afraid she's terrified your grandmother."
Julian didn't look at Vanessa. He looked past her, toward Clara, and offered a slight, almost imperceptible nod of respect. Then, he turned his cold, calculating gaze back to the woman in the red gown.
