Chapter 10 - The Beautiful, Noisy House

Six months later.
The new house was not perfect.
It was a small, noisy, slightly messy house in a quiet suburb of Guadalajara, far away from Querétaro and Coyoacán.
The walls were not painted a perfect clinical white; they were covered in Jimena’s colorful drawings of dinosaurs and suns. The floorboards were old and creaked loudly whenever anyone walked on them, but no one minded.
To Mateo, the sound of creaking floorboards was no longer a sound of terror. It was the sound of life.
It was the sound of Jimena chasing her brother through the hallway.
Emiliano had gained weight. His skin was healthy and sun-kissed, and his hair was cut short. He was attending a local school, where his teachers praised his quick mind and his gentle heart. He still had nightmares sometimes, but when he did, he didn't have to face them alone. He had a mother who held him and a father who would tear up the world to save him.
Mateo stood in the kitchen, brewing fresh coffee—not expensive cinnamon coffee, just regular black coffee in mismatched mugs.
He looked out the window into the backyard.
Laura was sitting on a wooden bench, laughing as Emiliano and Jimena kicked a soccer ball back and forth across the grass. The ball missed the goal and bounced off the fence, but no one cared.
Emiliano ran after the ball, his laughter ringing out clear and bright in the afternoon air.
Mateo walked out onto the porch, carrying two mugs. He handed one to Laura and sat down beside her, wrapping his arm around her waist.
"They're making a lot of noise," Laura smiled, leaning into him.
Mateo kissed her temple, his eyes locked on his children.

"It's the best sound in the world," Mateo said.
And for the first time in a very long time, there were no secrets beneath their feet. Only the solid, beautiful ground of a family that had survived the dark and found their way back to the light.
