Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Ranch

The darkness of the ranch was absolute. Outside, the wind howled through the dry brush.

"Manuel," Mateo whispered, his hand instantly reaching for the iron fireplace poker he had brought from Rebeca's house, now lying on the kitchen counter. "Where is your generator?"

"In the shed," Manuel whispered back. "But it shouldn't have cut out like this. The grid is stable tonight."

"They're here," Laura whispered, her voice trembling. She pressed Emiliano and Jimena close to her chest behind the heavy oak sofa.

Suddenly, the heavy wooden front door of the ranch was kicked inward with a deafening crash.

The beam of a high-powered flashlight swept across the room, blinding Mateo.

"Mateo," a familiar, calm voice called out from the dark.

It was Julian.

He stepped into the living room, flanked by two large, silent men in dark jackets. Julian’s face was bandaged on one side where the hot coffee had burned him, making him look grotesque and sinister in the flashlight's glare.

"You've run a long way," Julian said, adjusting his leather gloves. "But you can't run from the truth. I told you, Mateo. This isn't just about family. It's about survival."

"Get out of this house," Mateo said, stepping between Julian and his family, holding the iron poker.

"Do you think that little iron stick is going to stop a bullet, Mateo?" Julian laughed, a dry, humorless sound. "Let's be reasonable. I don't want to hurt you. Or Laura. Or the kids. I just want to finish what was started. The people who were looking for Emiliano... they found out he was alive tonight. Because of your little escape. They are on their way here right now."

"You're lying," Laura spat from behind the sofa. "You took our son! You kept him in a hole!"

"I kept him alive!" Julian shouted, his composure finally breaking. "Your father, Laura... he stole ten million pesos from the Cartel de Sierra. He ran. They wanted his grandson as payment. I made a deal with them. I told them the boy died. I staged the disappearance. I kept him hidden so they would stop looking! If they find out he's alive, they will slaughter every single one of us!"

"Then why didn't you tell us?" Mateo demanded.

"Because you would have done exactly what you're doing now!" Julian screamed. "You would have run! You would have made noise! And noise gets people killed!"

One of the men next to Julian checked his phone. "Boss. We have headlights approaching the main gate. Three SUVs. It's them."

May you like

Julian's face went completely pale. He looked at Mateo, his eyes wide with genuine, paralyzing fear.

"They tracked your phone, Mateo," Julian whispered. "They're here."
