Chapter 8 - The Siege

"We need to block the doors!" Manuel yelled.

The professional demeanor of the two guards Julian had brought vanished. They drew their weapons, looking out the windows into the dark courtyard.

Outside, the roar of heavy engines filled the air. Headlights cut through the dust, illuminating the front yard of the ranch. Three large, unmarked trucks had breached the main gate.

"Mateo, please," Julian pleaded, his voice cracking. "We have to hide. There is a cellar under the kitchen."

"No!" Mateo shouted. "I am never putting my son under a floor again!"

"They will kill us all!" Julian yelled.

Before anyone could move, the front windows of the ranch shattered. A barrage of gunfire tore through the living room, shredding the wooden furniture and the plaster walls.

"Get down!" Mateo screamed, throwing his body over Laura, Emiliano, and Jimena.

Manuel crawled toward the back hallway. "Follow me! There's a secure gun room in the back!"

The house shook as armed men began breaching the rear doors. Julian’s guards returned fire, the deafening noise of gunshots echoing inside the stone walls. One of Julian's guards was hit, collapsing onto the rug with a groan.

Julian, terrified, scrambled toward the kitchen, attempting to open the cellar door he had mentioned.

Mateo looked at his son. Emiliano was covering his ears, his face pale, but he wasn't crying. He looked at his father with a strange, quiet strength.

"Daddy," Emiliano whispered over the noise of the gunfire. "I'm not scared anymore."

Those words gave Mateo a surge of strength he had never felt before. He looked at Manuel. "Get Laura and the kids to the back. Now!"

Mateo grabbed the fallen guard's pistol. He had never fired a gun in his life, but as he looked at the men breaching his sanctuary, he knew he would do whatever it took to protect his family.

He stood up, hiding behind a stone pillar, and pointed the gun at the front door.

Two armed men burst through the shattered frame. Mateo closed his eyes and pulled the trigger.

The gun kicked violently in his hand. One of the men fell, clutching his shoulder. The other returned fire, the bullets chipping the stone pillar inches from Mateo's head.

"Mateo, run!" Laura screamed from the hallway.

Suddenly, a loud, sweeping sound filled the air.

A searchlight cut through the dust from above. The heavy, rhythmic thrumming of a helicopter blades vibrated through the roof.

"This is the Federal Police!" a voice boomed from a megaphone outside. "Drop your weapons and put your hands on your heads! You are surrounded!"
