Chapter 16 - The Silent Watchers

The success of the Irwin Community Sports Center made headlines across the country, but in my world, public attention was a double-edged sword. While Tyler threw himself into his physical therapy and coached local youth teams, I spent my nights in the basement office of our new home, monitoring a network that never truly slept.

Two weeks after the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Viper’s encrypted alert chime sounded on my desk terminal at three in the morning.

I clicked the link. A secondary server log lit up the screen in dark red text.

"Reaper," Viper’s voice came through the secure speaker, crisp despite the late hour. "We’ve got a hit on the automated tracking grid we set up around the Keystone Coalition’s remaining assets."

"Who's moving?" I asked, leaning closer to the monitor.

"A shadow holding company based out of Delaware," Viper replied. "They just attempted to execute a forced buyout of the land deed under the Sports Center. The filing came from a boutique law firm in Philadelphia—Vance & Associates."

I felt a cold notch form in my chest. "Donald Vance is in a federal holding cell awaiting sentencing."

"Donald Vance is," Viper agreed. "But his eldest daughter, Evelyn Vance, just landed at Philadelphia International from Zurich. She’s a senior partner at an international hedge fund and holds power of attorney over the family’s remaining offshore trusts. She’s not trying to save her father, Dennis. She’s trying to liquidate the evidence he left behind before federal marshals seize it."

"What evidence?"

"When we seized Senator Vance's red drive, we got his domestic accounts," Viper explained. "We didn't get the primary ledger for the international syndicate that supplied the initial capital for his political action committee. Evelyn Vance has the private keys. And if she liquidates those deeds, the sports center—and three other medical trusts—will be plunged into foreclosure litigation."

I stood up from my desk, looking out the basement window at the quiet, moonlit backyard.

"Dax and Ghost still in the region?" I asked.

"Dax is forty minutes away," Viper said. "Ghost is already in Philadelphia."

"Tell them to gear up," I said softly. "The Vance family hasn't learned that when you cut down the tree, you have to dig up the roots."
