Chapter 17 - The Steel HorizonBy eight o'clock the following evening, a cold autumn rain was falling over the financial district of downtown Philadelphia.

The glass-and-steel tower of Vance Financial Holdings stood fifty stories above the wet asphalt. On the top floor, executive lights burned late into the night.

Inside the private office, Evelyn Vance sat behind an obsidian desk. She was forty years old, impeccably dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, with the same cold, calculating blue eyes as her father. Across from her stood two heavy-set men in tailored dark coats—private security operators hired from a European contractor.

"The filings are submitted to the municipal court," her attorney said, standing by the window. "By nine o'clock tomorrow morning, an emergency injunction will freeze the Irwin Foundation's primary operational bank account."

Evelyn didn't look up from her tablet. "My father was weak. He let a janitor intimidate him into signing away forty million dollars of family capital because he was afraid of a public trial. I don't care about public opinion, Richard. I care about solvency."

"And what about Dennis Irwin?" the attorney asked nervously. "The man brought down a county sheriff's department and a state senator in less than seventy-two hours."

"Dennis Irwin is a retired soldier who got lucky with a camera and a few cheap tricks," Evelyn said coldly, setting her tablet down. "He has no standing in international finance. Once the injunction hits, he won't have the legal capital to fight us in federal court."

The lights in the office flickered twice, then dimmed to emergency amber.

Evelyn frowned, looking toward the door. "What was that?"

Her lead security guard reached for his earpiece. "Command, report status. Why did the floor grid drop?"

Static hissed through his receiver, followed by a low, measured voice that didn't belong to any guard in the building.

"Floor fifty secured," Ghost's voice came through the intercom system. "All elevator shafts locked down. You're isolated, Ms. Vance."
