Chapter 14 - The Space We ClaimSarah stepped forward, her voice professional, clear, and loud enough to wake the sleeping man in Seat 4A.

"Good afternoon, ma'am," Sarah said to the young woman. "We have an open seat in First Class today—Seat 1B. Would you allow me to assist you with your bags so you can relocate?"

The man in 4A jerked awake, blinking hard as he looked between Sarah, the young woman, and me.

"Wait, what?" he grunted, his voice thick with sleep. "What's going on?"

The young woman didn't answer him. She didn't look at him.

She stood up from her seat, pulled her sweater straight, and gathered her canvas tote bag. She looked the man straight in the eye as he hastily pulled his coat off her lap and scrambled to pull his legs back into his own space.

"Excuse me," she said to him—not with a whimper, but with a clear, composed, and undeniable authority.

The man’s face turned bright crimson as he scrambled out of his seat to let her pass into the aisle. He looked around at the nearby passengers, but just like six months ago, every eye in Rows 3 through 6 was fixed on him with cold, unspoken judgment.

The young woman followed Sarah up to the front of the aircraft.

As she reached Seat 1B—a plush leather armchair directly across the aisle from mine—she settled into the soft cushion, stretched her legs fully into the wide footwell, and let out a long, shuddering breath of absolute relief.

She turned her head across the central aisle, looking at me in Seat 2A.

"Thank you," she whispered, her voice thick with genuine emotion. "I'm Maya."

"I'm Margaret," I smiled, raising my glass of sparkling water toward her in a quiet, triumphant toast. "Welcome to First Class, Maya."
